Bali's name as a place to work online came before any visa for it. In 2018 Indonesia's tourism minister, Arief Yahya, said Canggu had become known worldwide as a hub for digital nomads, whom he described as people who relax and work online at the same time.1 The Remote Worker Visa, E33G, took effect on 1 April 2024: it runs up to a year, renewable once, for people earning at least US$60,000 a year from an employer abroad.2

Canggu does not have the most Wi-Fi cafés, though. Ubud and Denpasar lead, followed by Canggu and Seminyak, then the Bukit, with a smaller group in Sanur.

Local tip: If you have work due on Nyepi, plan to do it on your lodging's Wi-Fi: cafés stay shut and mobile data in Bali goes off for 24 hours.

Where these cafés are: Ubud (40), Denpasar (32), Seminyak & Kerobokan (23), Canggu (23), Uluwatu & the Bukit (14), Sanur (12), Kuta & Legian (10), Gianyar & Sukawati (7), Nusa Dua & Tanjung Benoa (5).

Connection speeds and coworking day passes

In Ookla's Speedtest Global Index for May 2026, Indonesia's fixed broadband ran at 47.10 Mbps, 117th of 149 countries, and mobile internet at 62.54 Mbps, 74th of 101.3 Before a video call, test the café line, and keep a local SIM's data as the backup.

When a café line will not do, coworking spaces sell day passes. As of July 2026, Honeycombers gave Outpost in Ubud from Rp248,000 a day, Ubud Space at Rp170,000 and Tropical Nomad in Canggu from about Rp260,000, while ZIN@Work and Tribal Bali in Canggu were free with a café order.4

Nyepi, the day mobile data goes off

On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, Indonesia's digital ministry asks operators to switch off mobile data in Bali for 24 hours; in 2026 the pause ran from 06:00 on 19 March to 06:00 on 20 March.5 Bali's communications office said that calls, SMS and Wi-Fi stay on.6

Still, it is not a day for working in a café. Work, travel and entertainment are prohibited, nobody is allowed onto beaches or streets, and the airport is shut.7 The next Nyepi falls on Monday 8 March 2027.8
