Bali grows its own coffee. The arabica comes from Kintamani, in Bangli regency, where it is planted above 900 m; some growers set it between orange trees, a pairing credited with Kintamani coffee's distinctive flavor.1 Coffee has been grown on the island since the early 1800s and was replanted around Kintamani in the early 20th century.1 Citrus is also the competition: in 2016 the head of a subak abian (farmers' association) in Catur village said many growers had cut their coffee to plant oranges, which paid better.2

Robusta is grown too. Pupuan, in Tabanan regency, sits at 500–1,000 m on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, and Bali as a whole produced 11,666 tonnes of robusta in 2021.3 In the cafés, Kintamani is the local single origin: Ubud Coffee Roastery roasts beans from Kintamani plantations on site, and a September 2026 guide describes the coffee as naturally bright and citrusy.4

The cafés serve a large visiting crowd as well as the island's own. Bali recorded 6,948,754 foreign arrivals in 2025, up 9.72% on 2024, and Australia remained the largest market, with about 1.63 million.5 The busiest café areas are in the south and center of the island, from the beach towns around the airport to the capital, Denpasar, and Ubud in the hills.

How coffee works in Bali

The everyday cup is kopi tubruk: coarsely ground coffee brewed straight in the glass with hot water and sugar, drunk once the grounds have settled to the bottom.6 It is the standard pour at warungs (small local eateries) and roadside stalls, and it comes sweet unless you ask for tanpa gula (without sugar).6 Kopi susu is coffee with milk; many sellers make it with krim kental manis, a sweetened condensed creamer, though some chains use fresh milk sweetened with gula aren (palm sugar).7

Read the bottom of the menu. Cafés in the tourist areas usually price before a 10% local restaurant tax, and many also add a service charge, generally 5–10% of the bill before tax.89 Warungs charge the menu price. Tipping is not expected at a warung; at a café, rounding up to the next Rp 10,000 or leaving the change is appreciated.6

Hours run long. More than half of Bali's cafés with posted hours serve until 21:00 or later, and Lifecrate in Canggu and Bali Coffee Express No.1 in Legian are open 24 hours. The weather sets the seating: from December to March the west monsoon brings heavy showers and high humidity, while June to September is less humid and can be cool in the evenings.9

One day a year everything stops. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, runs from 06:00 to 06:00 the next day; work and travel are prohibited, the airport stays closed, and most local restaurants close early the afternoon before.10 Shops, businesses and restaurants are shut for the day, and hotels stay open only for guests who remain on the premises.11 In 2026 it fell on 19 March.
