Denpasar has been the seat of Bali's provincial government since 1958 and a self-governing city since 1992; the 2020 census counted 725,314 residents.1 Its name joins the Balinese words dén (north) and pasar (market), after the market town it grew from on the site of today's Kumbasari Market.1 Renon, Sesetan and Sanur all belong to South Denpasar, the most populous of the city's four districts.1

In a 2025 roundup of cheap coffee shops in the city, detikBali chose places for nongkrong (hanging out with friends) and nugas (doing coursework), with drinks from Rp7,000.6 The biggest café cluster is on the Tukad streets of Renon, and Jalan Hayam Wuruk has a run of its own.

Local tip: Pair a morning at Pasar Badung with a stop at Kopi Bali, at Jalan Gajah Mada 80 on the same street, for a bag of the dark house roast or beans from other Indonesian regions.23

Renon: the monument and the Tukad streets

Renon is the government quarter. Its centerpiece is Lapangan Puputan Margarana, a large park around the Bajra Sandhi monument, with the governor's office along its northern edge.2 The monument is shaped like the bell (bajra) a Balinese priest rings, and its base holds a museum of the independence struggle.1 Toko Kopi Tuku, a Jakarta coffee label operating since 2015, has a branch at Jalan Raya Puputan 10 that also serves Javanese teas and fruit-infused coconut water.7 It opens daily 07:00–21:00, earlier than most Denpasar cafés.

South of the field lie the Tukad streets, after the Balinese word for a river.8 Karakter Kopi, in a converted old house on Jalan Tukad Barito Timur, makes manual-brew coffee.5 Lunga Coffee and Eatery and Tujuh Dua Coffee are on the same road, Jala Coffee is at 10a Tukad Unda, and Abstrakt Coffee is on Jalan Tukad Batanghari. As of 2025, drinks started at Rp7,000 at Ar Kopi on Jalan Tantular and at Rp10,000 at the semi-outdoor Porto Kopi on Jalan Tantular Barat.6

Udayana University's Sudirman campus, on Jalan P.B. Sudirman, holds the faculties of medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, tourism, economics, social and political sciences and animal husbandry; the rectorate and the other faculties are on the Bukit Jimbaran campus, south of the city.4 Kopi Kampus and Helo Cafe sit on Jalan P.B. Sudirman itself, and Domus Coffee & Eatery and BSH Coffee House are on Jalan Serma Made Pil.

Jalan Gajah Mada and Kopi Bali

Jalan Gajah Mada is the old shopping street, lined with small shops selling fabrics and local goods.2 Pasar Badung, the central market, is best visited early in the morning: fresh food on the ground floor, dried goods and spices on the second, handicrafts on the top.2

At number 80, Bhineka Jaya trades as Kopi Bali and describes itself as the city's leading coffee shop since 1935.3 Its house Kopi Bali is darker and slightly stronger than ordinary coffee, with what the owner calls a hint of cacao, and arabica and kopi luwak sell well too; the shop still keeps traditional percolators.3 It also sells beans from several Indonesian regions to take home.2

Sesetan, the bypass and late hours

Jalan Raya Sesetan has Funny Pancake 'n Coffee at 200, Cafe Cream at 260 and Kohvi Sesetan, which has indoor and outdoor tables, at 457. Along the bypass roads, Second Floor Coffee on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai keeps 08:00–17:00 and 20 ml Coffee 10:00–18:00, both Tuesday to Sunday, and Tikum Coffee on Jalan Bypass Gatot Subroto opens 10:00–19:00.

A handful of Denpasar cafés serve late. Tujuh Dua Coffee on Jalan Tukad Barito serves until midnight, from 09:00 on weekdays and 16:00 at weekends, and Warung Tobit, in Gang IX off Jalan Pulau Bungin, runs 08:00–00:00. Voltvet on Jalan Veteran closes at 23:00. Taxis can be hailed but fares are negotiable, and Trans Metro Dewata buses take only e-money cards or QR payment through apps such as GoPay or OVO.2
