Gejayan is the old name of the road east of UGM. On 11 August 2006 Sleman regency renamed the stretch from the Ring Road Utara junction south to Pasar Demangan as Jalan Affandi, after the painter; south of the market, as far as the junction with Jalan Urip Sumoharjo and Jalan Laksda Adisucipto, it is still Jalan Gejayan.1 Sanata Dharma University still writes its Mrican campus address as Jalan Affandi (Gejayan).2
Gejayan and Demangan's cafés are spread across side streets such as Jalan Pringgodani, Jalan Beo and Jalan Pandean Sari, and the lanes of Nologaten, rather than along the main road. Kopi Tiam Kapuas Hulu is on Jalan Wirajaya at the northern end, and Burlo Gaguh Rasa 03 shares Jalan Pringgodani with Paperplane Coffee.

8 May 1998 on Jalan Gejayan
The name is tied to the reform protests of 1998. On 8 May that year, students demanding President Soeharto's resignation clashed with security forces along Jalan Gejayan, which troops had blocked to keep them from joining a demonstration at UGM; the fighting lasted into the night and hundreds were injured.3
Security forces chased protesters into the Sanata Dharma and IKIP Negeri Yogyakarta campuses. Moses Gatutkaca was found badly injured on the road at about 21:30 and died on the way to Panti Rapih hospital.3
Book cafés in Nologaten
Basabasi Nologaten and Bento Nologaten share Jalan Jatempanol, and both have Wi-Fi; Basabasi also has outdoor seating. Basabasi is a group of cafés owned by Edi AH Iyubenu, whose Basabasi and Diva Press imprints publish books.5 The Nologaten branch is built around a Javanese gubug (hut) and hosts book discussions with well-known writers.4
Parking is collected by attendants: in 2024 they charged Rp2,000 for a motorbike at Basabasi Nologaten, a fee they set themselves, not the café.5
Roasters and late openers
Nabe Coffee opens at 07:00 and serves until midnight, and Angkringan Wedang Wibu is open Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to 00:00. Paperplane Coffee at Jalan Pringgodani No. 1B has air-conditioning, outdoor tables and takeaway, Ekologi Desk & Coffee at 10a Jalan Pandean Sari has Wi-Fi, and Kopi Johar is at 42A Jalan Beo.
On the main road, Sebelas Coffee at Jalan Affandi No. 31 is open 24 hours, and Svarga Flora Coffee and Plants at No. 26A keeps 08:00–01:00 in an indoor garden of plants with a separate bird area, and has a second branch on Jalan Sidomukti in Condongcatur.78 Hayati Coffee Roaster, at Demangan Baru No. 7, roasts locally grown beans in-house.6 Near the Ring Road end of the road, Kobessah Kopi has a 24-hour branch with plenty of room and free parking.4
Traffic on Jalan Affandi
Jalan Affandi clogs easily. During night-time maintenance in July 2026 a queue of about 500 m formed between the Jalan Alamanda junction and Selokan Mataram, and the worst congestion came after 21:00, when work began, and in the 16:00–17:00 evening rush.9 Vehicles turning in and out of the side alleys add to the jams.9
