Seturan and Babarsari are Jogja's second student hub after Jalan Kaliurang, and more than half of the people living here are students.1 The campuses around them include UPN "Veteran" in Babarsari, Atma Jaya, STTNAS, STIE YKPN and Amikom, and the area's warung (small eateries), cafés and night spots make it one of Sleman's main places for young people to hang out.1
Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta, founded on 27 September 1965, has three of its buildings, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventura and Teresa, in Babarsari, a fourth, Alfonsus, in Mrican, and about 11,000 students.2 The area's cafés reach from Jalan Harjosudiro in the north to Kampung Ambarrukmo near Jalan Laksda Adisucipto.3
Local tip: For coffee at breakfast time, WK. Ahau opens at 06:00; Tom's Milk does not open until 16:00, so leave the milk café for the evening.

A strip that keeps changing
Seturan's hangouts turn over fast. A 2019 look back at the area's old favorites recalled Coffee Toffee on Jalan Seturan Raya, which closed around 2011, and Kolong Langit Cafe on the same road, shut over permit problems.4 Distric Coffee, known for its night view over the Selokan Mataram canal, lasted from about 2011 to 2014, and Warkop Bardiman, a warkop (warung kopi, coffee stall) that drew students from UPN, YKPN, Atma Jaya and Amikom, had closed too.4
Beta Swalayan, a 24-hour minimarket on Jalan Seturan near UPN, stopped selling alcohol after Sleman tightened its rules and is much quieter now.4 The 24-hour café has taken over part of the late-night role: a 2025 guide picks 28 Coffee Seturan as a quiet study spot popular with students, with drinks from Rp15,000.5
Early and late openers
WK. Ahau is the first café in Seturan to open, at 06:00, and stays open until midnight, with Wi-Fi and outdoor seating. Campagna opens at 07:00 and closes at 22:00, and studio kopi runs 08:00–23:00 with Wi-Fi.
Matcha Cult at 58 Jalan Raya Kledokan serves 10:00–23:00. Carney.co does takeaway, Kopen Coffee is at 10 Jalan Harjosudiro, and Kopi Kampung Ambarrukmo, on Jalan Kampung Ambarrukmo, has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables.
Tom's Milk and the kafe susu
Tom's Milk, in Gang Garuni II, is a kafe susu (milk café) open 16:00–23:00. A 2017 study by a Gadjah Mada anthropologist found that students treat these places as somewhere to do coursework, share and unwind, drawn by music, Wi-Fi, attractive interiors and spots for group selfies.6 The cafés pass as a fashionable place to be seen, which keeps them full in the evenings.6
Flavored milk, the study notes, masks the fishy taste some students find in plain milk, and the prestige and modern image of the cafés count for more than nutrition.6
Ambarrukmo's royal pavilion
At the southern edge of the area, the Pendopo Agung Ambarrukmo, a pavilion built in 1857, once served as a resthouse for Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII.3 The Hotel Ambarrukmo went up beside it from 1964 and opened in 1966 as Yogyakarta's first luxury hotel, on Jalan Laksda Adisucipto, and the old pavilion was kept within the complex.3
