Jogja keeps late hours. Angkringan, the push-cart stalls that sell small rice parcels, fried snacks and hot drinks, trade from late afternoon until the early morning, and their benches seat becak (cycle rickshaw) drivers, office workers, students and artists side by side.1 A 2022 count by Komunitas Kopi Nusantara put Jogja at more than 3,000 coffee shops and coffee stalls, with about 3,000 angkringan selling coffee on top.7

Campus rules push students out at night too. UIN Sunan Kalijaga sets a 21:00 limit on campus activity, and Universitas Ahmad Dahlan's Campus 4 on the southern ring road closes at 22:00, its library at 16:00. Two UAD students told Mojok in 2023 that they worked in coffee shops almost every day, spending about Rp25,000 a day.5

Local tip: Trans Jogja buses stop at 21:30, so set up Gojek or Grab before a late night at an angkringan; at Lik Man on Jalan Wongsodirjan, a glass of kopi joss cost Rp5,000 as of 2022.

Kopi joss at the Tugu angkringan

The city's best-known late drink comes from Angkringan Lik Man, one of the first angkringan north of Tugu Station. The stall traded inside the station from 1968 to 1972 and settled on Jalan Wongsodirjan in 1974; the family still ran it in 2022.2 Many early customers were railway workers from East Java who asked for kopi klothok, a boiled coffee. Lik Man could not make it and dropped a burning lump of charcoal into the glass instead.4

Customers named it kopi joss after the hiss.2 The coffee is brewed tubruk-style, grounds and all in the glass, and the charcoal comes from the anglo, the clay stove that keeps the water hot; tamarind-wood charcoal is said to give it its taste. A UGM chemistry student measured 55.13 mg of caffeine per 100 ml in kopi joss against 68.78 mg in plain black coffee.3

A glass cost Rp5,000 as of 2022, with most of the food under Rp10,000.2 Nasi kucing ("cat rice", a small wrapped parcel of rice) cost Rp1,000 to Rp1,500 in 2021.3

Late cafés in Kotabaru and Seturan

Kotabaru has as many late cafés as the Malioboro and Jalan Kaliurang areas, and Seturan almost as many. In Kotabaru, Bincang Kopi at 36 Jalan Cik Di Tiro only opens in the evening, 17:30–23:30. Awor Gallery & Coffee on Jalan Cornelis Simanjuntak and Coolhands both run 09:00–00:00, Couvee Reside 07:00–00:00, and TUKU on Jalan Sajiono 08:00–22:00.

Out east in Seturan and Babarsari, WK. Ahau keeps an 18-hour day, 06:00–00:00. Matcha Cult at 58 Jalan Raya Kledokan opens 10:00–23:00, studio kopi 08:00–23:00, and Tom's Milk on Gang Garuni II starts at 16:00 and closes at 23:00. Campagna, open from 07:00, shuts at 22:00.

The latest closers elsewhere

Saorsa Selatan, at 1 Jalan Keloran in Nitiprayan on the west side, stays open later than most: it opens 14:00–02:00. Also in the west, Hidden Milk and Meals runs 12:00–23:55. In Gejayan, Nabe Coffee opens 07:00–00:00, and Angkringan Wedang Wibu serves Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to midnight; wedang means a hot drink, and wedang jahe, made with ginger, is an angkringan standard.1

South of the Kraton, Tirana art house & kitchen closes at 00:00, Arka Coffee and Space at 23:59 and Dropshot Espresso Bar at 23:30. Near Tugu, Angkringan KR Yogyakarta on Jalan P Mangkubumi works the night shift, 19:30–05:30, and Tugu Lor stays open until 23:00 Friday to Sunday. For no closing time at all, Cafe Manuk Londho at 213 Jalan Tukangan and Cold 'N Brew at Jalan Kaliurang Km 5,7 are open 24 hours.

Getting home after 22:00

Trans Jogja, the city bus network, runs from 05:30 to 21:30 and stops only at its designated shelters, so a late coffee usually means a ride home by app.6 Gojek, Grab and Maxim are generally cheaper than taxis and waits in the center are short, though drivers speak little English.6

FAQ

Open late in Yogyakarta: questions

Where did kopi joss start in Yogyakarta, and what is it?

Kopi joss started at Angkringan Lik Man, a street stall north of Tugu Station, now on Jalan Wongsodirjan. It is tubruk-style black coffee with a burning lump of charcoal dropped into the glass, named after the hiss it makes. Railway workers who wanted East Javanese boiled coffee inspired it. A glass cost Rp5,000 as of 2022.

Which cafés in Yogyakarta stay open latest at night?

Saorsa Selatan in Nitiprayan on the west side is open 14:00–02:00. Angkringan KR Yogyakarta on Jalan P Mangkubumi trades 19:30–05:30. Several cafés run until midnight, including Awor Gallery & Coffee and Coolhands in Kotabaru, WK. Ahau in Seturan and Tirana art house & kitchen south of the Kraton. Cafe Manuk Londho on Jalan Tukangan is open 24 hours.

How do you get home from a late-night café in Yogyakarta?

Trans Jogja city buses run only from 05:30 to 21:30 and stop at designated shelters, so after a late coffee most people use a ride-hailing app. Gojek, Grab and Maxim are generally cheaper than taxis, with short waits in the center, though drivers speak little English.
