Universitas Gadjah Mada opened on 19 December 1949 as Indonesia's first state university. Its main campus is at Bulaksumur, in Sleman regency on the city's northern side, and in 2020 it had about 56,110 students across 18 faculties.1 Jalan Kaliurang, shortened to Jakal, splits the campus and runs north from the Mirota–UGM intersection all the way to the hill resort of Kaliurang.2

Most of the cafés around that road sit on side lanes such as Jalan Pandega Marta and Gang Dandangulo rather than on Jakal itself. Three are open 24 hours, more than in any other part of the city.

Local tip: Use the Km number to find a café on Jalan Kaliurang: Cold 'N Brew is at Km 5.7, and Kopi Klotok at Km 16 is a ride north, best reached early on a weekday.8

Campus Sundays and milk cafés

On Sunday mornings the UGM boulevard fills with students, joggers and food stalls; 07:00–09:00 is the time to go.4 Cafe Kehutanan UGM (kehutanan means forestry) is on Jalan Persatuan.

Milk cafés belong to the student routine here. A study of milk cafés in Sleman, with interviews from March to May 2015, found that adolescents went for refreshments, for Wi-Fi to do coursework and for club meetings, and named health only as their last reason.7

North to Kopi Klotok

Jakal climbs toward Mount Merapi; Kaliurang, at the top, is a town on the volcano's southern slope.4 At Km 16, in Pakem, Kopi Klotok boils its coffee in a pot over a charcoal stove and is named for the klotok-klotok sound; it opened in 2015 and is open 07:00–22:00.8 As of December 2024 a kopi klotok cost Rp5,000, and the place is often full, so go early or on a weekday.8

The volcano's slopes grow coffee as well. Sleman counts kopi Merapi, mostly robusta with some arabica, as a regional specialty, and farmers in Cangkringan have planted it on former sand-mining land.9
