Cafés with Outdoor Seating in Yogyakarta

Tables outside, best from June to September before the monsoon returns.

Yogyakarta has a tropical monsoon climate, and the calendar decides when an outdoor table works. June to September each bring less than 100 mm of rain, August only about 16 mm, while January, the wettest month, averages around 392 mm. Temperatures hardly change through the year, averaging 26–27 °C.1

Sitting outside also has an older local form, lesehan: sitting on a mat on the ground. After the shops on Jalan Malioboro close for the night, food stalls lay mats in front of them for lesehan dinners, eaten by hand, with cutlery on request.3 Cafés with outdoor tables stretch from Jalan Kaliurang near UGM to the old silver town of Kotagede.

Local tip: From November to March, choose a café with an indoor room as well as outdoor tables, such as Canie Coffee & Space or Cold 'N Brew on Jalan Kaliurang or Paperplane Coffee in Gejayan, all air-conditioned, so a downpour doesn't end the visit.

Where these cafés are: UGM & Jalan Kaliurang (4), Kotabaru & Cik Di Tiro (3), Gejayan & Demangan (3), Malioboro & Tugu (2), Seturan & Babarsari (2), Kraton & Prawirotaman (1), West Yogyakarta (1), Kotagede (1).

When the rainy season reaches Jogja

Rainfall climbs steeply in the last quarter: about 136 mm in October, 237 mm in November and 278 mm in December.31 For the 2024–25 season, the provincial climatology office expected the rains to reach central Yogyakarta in the first ten days of November and to peak in February 2025.2

The changeover between seasons is called pancaroba, and for it officials warned of towering cumulus clouds, heavy rain with wind and, at times, hail.2 From December to March, an outdoor table is a gamble on a dry spell.

Lesehan, mats and the Malioboro rules

Street coffee in Jogja is often drunk at ground level. At Angkringan Lik Man near Tugu Station, many customers now sit lesehan on mats along the pavement instead of on the long benches around the cart.4 In Gejayan, Angkringan Wedang Wibu has seating outside and serves Monday to Saturday, 18:00 to midnight.

Jalan Malioboro, the main shopping street, is a pedestrian zone lined with batik and handicraft shops.1 It is also a smoke-free area under city regulation 2/2017, and since 2025 smoking there outside the designated spots can bring a fine of up to Rp7.5 million. Those spots are the Abu Bakar Ali parking lot, the north side of Plaza Malioboro and the third floor of Pasar Beringharjo.5

Where the outdoor tables are

The UGM and Jalan Kaliurang area has the most cafés with outdoor seating. Canie Coffee & Space at 99 Jalan Pandega Marta opens 09:00–22:00 and LEIDEN Coffee & Work on Gang Dandangulo 08:00–23:00. Cold 'N Brew, at Jalan Kaliurang Km 5,7, and Sender Coffe, also on Jalan Kaliurang, are open 24 hours.

Gejayan and Demangan come next, level with Kotabaru: alongside Angkringan Wedang Wibu, Basabasi Nologaten is on Jalan Jatempanol and Paperplane Coffee at Jalan Pringgodani No.1B. In Seturan, Kopi Kampung Ambarrukmo sits on Jalan Kampung Ambarrukmo, and WK. Ahau is open 06:00–00:00. Closer to the center, Ruang Jaka Coffee & Free Wifi is at 17B Jalan Polowijan and TUKU at 15 Jalan Sajiono in Kotabaru. Amongcoffee, at Blok B 12 Jalan Nusa Indah in the west, closes earliest, at 18:00.

An evening table in Kotagede

Kotagede, in the city's southeast, holds the remains of the first capital of the Mataram Sultanate, founded in the 16th century, and is known internationally for its silverwork. Workshops line Jalan Kemasan, and some lanes are narrow alleys between brick houses, including thick-walled Kalang merchant houses that mix Javanese and Dutch styles.6 Wikivoyage describes it as the city's old economic center.3

Lokanusa Kotagede, on Gang Satu, has outdoor seating and Wi-Fi and opens 14:00–23:00, late enough for a coffee after the silver shops close.
