Malioboro is Jogja's main shopping street, about 2 km of shops, street artists and lesehan (floor-seated) dinners running south from Tugu station toward the palace square.2 The Tugu monument and the Kraton anchor the Cosmological Axis, a six-kilometer north–south line from Tugu through the palace to Krapyak, which UNESCO's World Heritage Committee inscribed at its Riyadh session on 18 September 2023.1

The Tugu (pillar) went up in 1755 under Sultan Hamengkubuwono I as Tugu Golong-Gilig, about 25 m tall; it collapsed in the earthquake of 10 June 1867, and the Dutch rebuilt it in 1889 at 15 m.3 The area's cafés run from Tugu Lor, north of the monument, to Jalan Tukangan east of Malioboro, and three of them serve through the night.

Local tip: Walk north from Malioboro after 16:00, when the Mangkubumi angkringan open, and order kopi joss with a nasi kucing or two; the glass costs about Rp5,000–10,000.7

How kopi joss began

Kopi joss started at the angkringan of a vendor known as Lik Man, by Tugu station. Many of his customers were railway workers from East Java who asked for kopi kothok, coffee boiled together with sugar and water; he could not make it, dropped a burning piece of charcoal into a glass of coffee instead, and the customers named the result.5 Joss imitates the hiss of the ember hitting the coffee.4

The stall traded inside the station from 1968 to 1972 and moved in 1974 to Jalan Wongsodirjan, which still has a Kopi Jos stall; the provincial tourism office counts it among the first angkringan set up north of the station, and the business has passed down through the family.4 As of February 2026, Lik Man's angkringan trades at Pasar Kranggan, Jalan Poncowinatan No. 7, from about 16:00 to 23:00, at Rp5,000–10,000 a glass.7

Angkringan along Jalan Mangkubumi

Jos Coffee Angkringan Tugu, at Jalan Pangeran Mangkubumi No. 62, opens around 16:00 and serves until about 01:30, and the Pak Agus stall at No. 5 runs roughly 17:00–00:00.7 The coffee is robusta with sugar and the ember is kesambi wood; nasi kucing (small rice parcels) and hot ginger drinks are the usual company.6

Angkringan KR Yogyakarta, also on Jalan P Mangkubumi, is open nightly from 19:30 to 05:30, the latest closing time around Tugu. Cafe Manuk Londho at 213 Jalan Tukangan and Loko Coffee Shop are open 24 hours, so there is a table somewhere at any hour.

Daytime coffee and walking the street

By day, Tea Factory on Jalan Bumijo is open 10:00–22:00, and Tugu Lor runs from 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Thursday and until 23:00 Friday to Sunday. Tanamera Coffee Indonesia is at 9 Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, by the monument, and The Civet house, west of Malioboro, keeps 09:00–23:00.

The monument stands where Jalan Mangkubumi, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan A.M. Sangaji and Jalan Diponegoro meet.3 Malioboro has been clear of sidewalk vendors since 3 February 2022, when they moved into two buildings, Teras Malioboro 1 and 2.8 Parts of the street are pedestrianized, motorbikes park at Abu Bakar Ali, and pickpockets work the crowds.2
