Nakanoshima is the long island between the Dōjima and Tosabori rivers, and Kitahama faces it from the south bank.1 From the early Edo period Kitahama was Osaka's money quarter, where moneychangers and rice brokers gathered and riverside restaurants took guests who arrived by boat; after the Meiji Restoration it became the city's securities district.2

Trams later replaced the boats, and the riverside houses gave way to offices that turned their backs on the water. In recent years shops and offices have faced the river again, and local businesses started Kitahama Terrace, a row of decks built out over the Tosabori.2 Several Kitahama cafés sit on that stretch or in the prewar buildings behind it.

Local tip: Moto Coffee opens at 12:00. For a morning coffee by the water, start at Glitch (08:00 on weekdays) and walk east along Nakanoshima to Naniwabashi in time for Moto's terrace.
