Shinsekai (新世界, "new world") was laid out in 1912, its northern half modeled on Paris and its southern half on New York's Coney Island, and a Luna Park amusement park ran there until 1923.1 Its tower, Tsūtenkaku, first opened in July 1912 at 64 m. It was dismantled for war materials in 1943, and the present 103 m tower was finished in 1956. Its name, coined by the Confucian scholar Fujisawa Nangaku, means a tall building that reaches the heavens; it became a registered Tangible Cultural Property in May 2007.2

Tennōji lies east of Shinsekai across Tennōji Park. Abeno Harukas, 300 m tall with 60 floors above ground and an observatory on floors 58 to 60, opened above Kintetsu's Ōsaka Abenobashi Station on 7 March 2014 and was Japan's tallest building until 2023.3

Local tip: See Tsūtenkaku in the morning and leave coffee for later: Swan by Tennōji Station stays open until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mix juice, Billiken and Cocoroom

Osaka's mix juice (ミックスジュース, a blended fruit drink) is said to have started in 1948 at a Shinsekai fruit shop that later became a kissaten; it won fans because it used fully ripe fruit at its sweetest.5

The first Billiken arrived in 1912 and went missing after Luna Park closed; a second was made in 1979, and the current one, the third, in 2012 for the tower's centenary. More than a million people visit the tower each year.2

Cocoroom began in 2003 as a café in Shinsekai meant as a place for expression and encounters, moved to the Kamagasaki district of Nishinari in 2008 and added a guesthouse in 2016. It also runs the Kamagasaki Art University (釜ヶ崎芸術大学).6 It is at Taishi 2-3-3 and opens daily 10:00–19:00.
