Umeda is the heart of Kita, the northern center of Osaka, around JR Osaka Station. Its name was first written 埋田, "buried field", before the characters changed to 梅田, "plum field", with the same sound.1 Osaka Station, finished in 1943, and the new Midōsuji boulevard turned the city's main axis from east–west along the river to north–south.2

JR, three subway lines, Hankyu and Hanshin now meet here.2 Osaka Station has more passengers than any other on the JR West network, and much of the walking happens below ground, in an underground city that began in 1942 as a station underpass.1

Local tip: Madura is closed on Sundays. On other days, order any dish and add coffee or tea for ¥200; Kita-Shinchi on the JR Tōzai Line is the nearest station.

The Ekimae buildings and Madura

South of the station, the four Osaka Ekimae buildings were built under a 1961 urban redevelopment law, in a project nicknamed the Diamond district. The first was finished in 1970, the year of the Osaka Expo, and the fourth in 1983.2 The master plan, by Tōhata Kenzō, set back the upper floors to soften the bulk of the towers. Because the original landholders moved in, the basements are crowded with restaurants, izakaya (pubs), kissaten, ticket shops, camera shops and record stores.2

Madura (マヅラ), in the basement of the first building, keeps the futuristic look of 1970, the year it opened.23 Its ceiling is a night sky set with star-like lights, and two identical hand-carved wooden reliefs sit between plexiglass panels that let in daylight. Any food order becomes a set with coffee or tea for ¥200 more, and from 17:00 it also serves drinks, with bottle keep for regulars.3 It is closed on Sundays; the nearest stations are Kita-Shinchi on the JR Tōzai Line and Nishi-Umeda on the Yotsubashi Line.3

Chayamachi, Nakatsu and Umekita

North of Hankyu Umeda, Chayamachi has grown quickly since the NU Chayamachi mall was built;1 WIRED CAFE and DRUNK BEARS share the address Chayamachi 10-12. Further north, Kante Grande (カンテグランデ) has served chai since 1972 from a basement at Nakatsu 3-32-2, four minutes from Exit 5 of Nakatsu Station. A chai cost ¥580 in 2022.4

North of Osaka Station, the old rail yards are becoming Grand Green Osaka. Its first area opened on 6 September 2024. Umekita Park there covers about 45,000 m², and the full complex is due in fiscal 2027.5 Grand Front Osaka, next to it, opened in spring 2013.2
