Shinsaibashi is the shopping stretch of Minami along Midōsuji, the boulevard Osaka completed in 1937 as the face of the city, laid out 24 ken (about 44 m) wide with four rows of trees at a time when that width was unheard of.1 West of Shinsaibashi Station, between Nagahori and Dōtonbori, lies Amerikamura, centered on Triangle Park.2 In the Edo period this was a charcoal district; before its boom it was a quiet quarter of company warehouses, parking lots and houses.23

Its name comes from the shops that opened after 1965 selling clothes and goods imported from the United States.2 Coffee played its part early: in 1969 a kissaten called Loop opened facing Triangle Park, and young creators began to gather around it.3 Further west, Horie's Tachibana-dōri has been a furniture street since the end of the Edo period.4

Local tip: LiLo pours until 23:00 every day, so leave it for after dinner on Dōtonbori, at the southern edge of Amerikamura.
