Osaka runs on the kissaten (喫茶店, a coffee house). In 2021 Osaka Prefecture had 6,758 of them, more than any other prefecture, ahead of Aichi with 6,171 and Tokyo with 6,121.1 Junkissa American has poured coffee on Dōtonbori since 1950, four years after the family started out under another name.23 Madura, under the Osaka Ekimae Daiichi Building, still keeps the look of 1970, the year the building above it was finished.4

The specialty side is younger. Mill Pour opened in 2010 with a focus on espresso,5 and LiLo Coffee Roasters started roasting in 2014 as the coffee corner of a hair salon upstairs in the same Shinsaibashi building.6 Glitch, a Tokyo roaster founded in Jimbōchō in 2015, chose Nakanoshima for its only shop in Kansai.7 At the cheap end, Seven-Eleven raised a regular hot coffee from its self-serve machines from ¥120 to ¥140 in July 2025.8

How coffee works in Osaka

At a kissaten, the plain order is the house blend, burendo (ブレンド): ¥700, tax included, at Junkissa American.10 Across Osaka city a cup of coffee averaged ¥441 in 2024 in the national retail price survey, so the classic rooms sit well above the middle.9 Older Osakans once ordered iced coffee as reikō (冷コー); the word has nearly disappeared since the Heisei era began in 1989, partly because so many kissaten have closed.13

Before lunch, many kissaten turn a drink order into mōningu (モーニング, a morning set). In Kansai the set is a breakfast served at coffee shops, usually from opening until about 11:00, at a modest price.11 At one Kita café reviewed in March 2025, drinks started at ¥550, and ¥300 more added thick butter toast, a boiled egg, salad and a small portion of ketchup spaghetti.12

Leave no tip. Japan's national tourism organization says tipping is not common in bars, cafés, restaurants, taxis or hotels.14 Smoke is rarer than it was: since 1 April 2025, Osaka Prefecture's secondhand-smoke ordinance has made eateries with more than 30 m² of seating non-smoking indoors as a rule. That ended the choice that existing small businesses with up to 100 m² of seating had kept under national law.15 Junkissa American bans smoking inside and out.3

FAQ

Cafés in Osaka: common questions

How much does a coffee cost in Osaka?

A cup of coffee in Osaka city averaged ¥441 in 2024, according to the national retail price survey. Classic kissaten charge more: Junkissa American on Dōtonbori lists its house blend at ¥700, tax included. LiLo Coffee Roasters served drip coffee from ¥500 in 2023, and a regular hot coffee from a Seven-Eleven machine has cost ¥140 since July 2025.

Which neighborhood of Osaka has the most cafés?

Umeda & Kita and Shinsaibashi, Amerikamura & Horie have the most cafés, followed by South Osaka. Umeda's cafés fill the station towers and the basements of the Ekimae buildings; Shinsaibashi's run west from Midōsuji into Amerikamura and Horie.

What is a morning set at an Osaka kissaten?

A morning set, or mōningu, is breakfast added to a drink order at a coffee shop. In Kansai it usually runs from opening until about 11:00 at a modest price. At one Kita café in March 2025, ¥300 on top of a drink from ¥550 bought thick butter toast, a boiled egg, salad and a small portion of ketchup spaghetti.

Can you smoke in Osaka cafés?

Less often than before. Since 1 April 2025, Osaka Prefecture's secondhand-smoke ordinance has made eateries with more than 30 m² of seating non-smoking indoors as a rule. Before that, existing small businesses with up to 100 m² of seating could choose to allow smoking under national law. Junkissa American on Dōtonbori is non-smoking inside and out.

Do you tip in Osaka cafés?

No. Japan's national tourism organization says tipping is not common for services in bars, cafés, restaurants, taxis and hotels, and Osaka's kissaten and coffee bars are no exception. Pay what the menu or bill says. The one case the organization mentions is a private guide or interpreter used to overseas customs, and even then a tip goes in an envelope.
