Asahi Ward lies in the northeast of Osaka. Its commercial spine, the Senbayashi shopping street (千林商店街), took shape after the Keihan railway opened in 1910, as shops selling daily goods to the Kitakawachi area gathered there.1 The street escaped wartime bombing, reopened quickly after 1945, won customers with range and low prices, and put up an all-weather arcade in 1958.1
In 1957 Isao Nakauchi opened the first Daiei store near Senbayashi Station, the start of one of Japan's big supermarket chains; it stayed until 1984.21 Today the street runs about 700 m between Keihan's Senbayashi Station and Senbayashi-Ōmiya on the Tanimachi Line, with about 200 shops, and carries the nickname of Japan's cheapest shopping street.3
Local tip: Come in early June for the irises in Jōhoku Park, and take your coffee first: ミミズクカフェ opens at 06:30, Monday to Saturday.

Senbayashi-Ōmiya Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line is about two minutes from the arcade, and Keihan's Senbayashi Station is at its other end.3 Takadono is the next stop on the Tanimachi Line, at Sekime-Takadono, which opened in April 1977.4
Supermarkets followed the shoppers. Izumiya traded here from 1961 to 1970, Nichii from 1963 to 2002, Nagasakiya from 1967 to 1985 and Topos from 1984 to 2005, and the arcade roof has been replaced three times since the first canvas one.1
Takadono has more of the ward's cafés than any other neighborhood, and many carry kissa in their names. 純喫茶クラウン is at Takadono 14-29; jun-kissa (純喫茶, "pure kissa") is a label that spread in the 1930s among coffee houses that served no alcohol and employed no hostesses.5 喫茶シコー is at 29-16 and 三協珈琲 at 5-13.
洋酒喫茶ターミナル, at 10-16, takes the opposite line: yōshu kissa means a kissa that pours Western liquor. カフェルポ and 喫茶どんぐりの木 share the address Takadono 19-25, and Yoko Coffee Osaka (6-9) has outdoor seats and opens weekdays 09:00–17:00.
On the arcade, fig is at Senbayashi 1-14, カフェフィールド at Senbayashi 5-14 and コーヒーショップABC地下西店, a basement coffee shop, at Senbayashi 2-15. 和光, nearby, opens daily 07:00–18:00 and does takeaway.
ミミズクカフェ opens earliest in the ward, at 06:30 from Monday to Saturday. Elsewhere in the ward, コーヒー待夢 is at Morishōji 9-14, あおぞら珈琲店 at Imaichi 6-14 and 黄昏 at Ōmiya 4-9. In Shimizu, ここちこ (14-2) and シェルティ (10) are a few blocks apart, and Nakamiya has クール (25-5) and 砂どけい (25-7) side by side.
Jōhoku Iris Garden, in Jōhoku Park, opened in May 1964 as a stroll garden. It holds about 13,000 plants of some 250 hanashōbu (花菖蒲, Japanese iris) cultivars from the Edo, Higo and Ise lines.6 In 2026 it opened from 15 May to 10 June, 09:30–17:00, with peak bloom expected in early June and adult entry at ¥200.6 On 30 and 31 May the garden opened from 08:00 to 18:00, and junior-high students and younger children, Osaka residents aged 65 and over and people with disability certificates enter free.6
