Lisbon's fastest coffee is drunk standing up. At the balcão (counter), locals in a hurry finish a bica in two sips.1 Bica is the Lisbon word for an espresso, and street cafés planned to charge €0.90–0.95 for one from January 2025.23 The pastelaria, a pastry shop with a coffee counter, is the commonest kind of café in the city. The city's café history runs long: Martinho da Arcada has served Praça do Comércio since January 1782, and A Brasileira opened on Rua Garrett in November 1905.45

Specialty coffee came much later. A 2015 Sprudge report named two cafés leading it: Fábrica Coffee Roasters, opened in June 2014 on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, and Copenhagen Coffee Lab in Príncipe Real.6

How coffee works in Lisbon

Ask for um café anywhere in Portugal, or uma bica in Lisbon, for an espresso; in the north the same cup is a cimbalino.2 A galão comes in a glass, with more milk than coffee, a meia de leite is equal parts coffee and milk, and a pingado is an espresso with a drop of milk.2 Cafés may charge different prices at the counter, at a table and on the esplanada (terrace), as long as customers are told beforehand.7

Sit wherever there's a free table; nobody waits to be seated. In traditional places you often pay at the till as you leave, saying what you had.1 Tipping is optional: €0.20–1 is plenty, but don't leave only 1, 2 and 5 cent coins.8 About a third of Lisbon's cafés close on Sundays and more than half shut by 20:00 on weekdays, so plan a Sunday coffee ahead.

FAQ

Cafés in Lisbon: common questions

How much does coffee cost in Lisbon?

Lisbon street cafés planned to charge €0.90–0.95 for a bica (espresso) at the counter from January 2025, and the restaurant association ProVar expected no rise in 2026. In September 2024, pastéis de nata at well-rated Lisbon pastelarias cost €1.10–1.60. At one specialty café in Arroios, a bica cost €2 and a galão €3.50 in June 2024. Tables and terraces can cost more if the price list says so.

Which neighborhood of Lisbon has the most cafés?

Alvalade & north and Avenidas Novas & Saldanha have the most cafés, followed by Arroios & Anjos. Both are residential districts, where pastry shops and bakeries cluster. Baixa & Chiado has fewer cafés but the oldest addresses, including Martinho da Arcada, open since 1782.

What is a bica in Lisbon?

A bica is the Lisbon name for an espresso. In the north of Portugal the same coffee is a cimbalino, and um café works everywhere. A Brasileira, which opened on Rua Garrett in 1905, is said to have been the first shop to sell it. Ask for a café cheio for a fuller cup or curto for a shorter one; a pingado adds a drop of milk.

Is it cheaper to drink coffee at the counter in Lisbon?

It can be. Lisbon cafés may charge different prices at the counter, at a table and on the esplanada (terrace), provided customers are told beforehand. Any terrace fee must appear on the price list, which has to be in Portuguese and posted at the entrance and inside. A fee that turns up only on the bill can be contested in the Livro de Reclamações, the official complaints book.

Do you tip in Lisbon cafés?

Tipping is optional in Lisbon cafés, and less expected in a pastelaria than in a restaurant. If you want to leave something, €0.20–1 is appropriate, and many cafés keep a tip jar by the till, at least around Christmas and Easter. Avoid tipping only in 1, 2 and 5 cent coins, which looks like dumping unwanted change.
