A Chicago sidewalk café permit now runs for twelve months, from March 1 to February 28, so a café can keep tables out all year if it renews.1 The weather sets the real season: at O’Hare the daily mean is 25.2°F (−3.8°C) in January and 75.4°F (24.1°C) in July.2

In summer, readings near the lake can be several degrees cooler than inland, especially when a lake breeze blows.2 Outdoor café seats are spread across the city rather than concentrated in one district, from Bronzeville and Bridgeport in the south to Lincoln Square and Andersonville in the north.

Local tip: Whispers at Mariano Park on State Street in the Gold Coast keeps its patio open until midnight from Friday to Sunday.3
