Haight-Ashbury is bounded on the west by Stanyan Street and Golden Gate Park, with the Panhandle along its northern edge; a freeway planned through the Panhandle in the 1950s was dropped after a citizens' freeway revolt.1 The Summer of Love in 1967 made it synonymous with the counterculture.1 The first head shop, Ron and Jay Thelin's Psychedelic Shop, opened on Haight Street on January 3, 1966, and one of the neighborhood's coffee shops then was The Blue Unicorn.1
Locals call the stretch near the park the Upper Haight, in contrast to the Haight-Fillmore, or Lower Haight, to the east.1 Haight Street has the most cafés in the district, and vegan options are common: Cafe Velora, Coffee Cantata and The Grind Cafe on Haight all serve them. Cole Valley, south of the Upper Haight, adds a short run of cafés on Cole Street.
Local tip: For coffee before a walk in Golden Gate Park, Flywheel on Stanyan Street opens at 07:00 daily; Coffee to the People on Masonic Avenue opens an hour earlier.
