SoMa, short for South of Market, runs from Market Street to Mission Creek and from the bay to roughly 13th Street and US 101, though its edges vary by source.1 It was laid out in 1847 as the 100 Vara Survey, was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and spent most of the next century as warehouses and working-class streets, until the dot-com boom of the late 1990s turned its lofts into offices.1

Coffee here follows the office day. SoMa ties with the Castro for the most specialty cafés in San Francisco, and the densest blocks are on 2nd, Fremont and New Montgomery streets. It is also where the city's Yemeni coffee houses began: Delah Coffee House opened in SoMa in June 2022, the first of its kind in San Francisco and the Bay Area.2

Local tip: On a Saturday many office-block cafés are shut; Cumaica on Mission Street opens at 06:30 and Sightglass on 7th Street at 07:00.
