Union Square is a 2.6-acre plaza bordered by Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton streets, named for the pro-Union rallies Thomas Starr King led there before and during the Civil War.1 Its Dewey Monument was dedicated in 1903, and the square reopened after a redesign on July 25, 2002.1 Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue are all within three blocks, and the Geary and Curran theaters stand one block west.1 The Westin St. Francis is the only hotel on the square itself.1

South of Geary lies the Tenderloin, bounded by Mason Street, Market Street and Van Ness Avenue, where housing is almost entirely single-room-occupancy hotel rooms; in July 2008 it became a historic district on the National Register.2 Vietnamese refugees arrived from the late 1970s and opened restaurants, shops and bánh mì (Vietnamese sandwich) coffee shops, and two blocks of Larkin Street are officially named Little Saigon.2

Local tip: Before the stores open, Angel Cafe & Deli at 700 Geary serves from 06:00 (07:00 on Sunday); after dark, Cafe la Rosa on O'Farrell is open until 22:00 most nights.
