The Sunset fills the avenues south of Golden Gate Park, from the Inner Sunset's shops on Irving Street and 9th Avenue west to Ocean Beach.12 Until the Twin Peaks Tunnel opened in 1917, most of it was a sparsely populated stretch of sand dunes known as the Outside Lands, and the last dunes were leveled in the 1950s.2

Irving Street has more cafés than any street in San Francisco except Geary, many of them tea and bubble-tea shops, and the Sunset has more bakery cafés than any other neighborhood. Taraval and Noriega streets come next. Near the beach, Andytown Coffee Roasters opened in March 2014 as a pocket roastery and scratch bakery, with no employees.3

Local tip: Bring a layer to Ocean Beach even in July. Java Beach Cafe at 1396 La Playa and Andytown on Lawton Street both serve until 17:00.

The Outer Sunset and Ocean Beach

The Outer Sunset is the foggiest part of San Francisco; the clearest weather usually comes between August and December, and the cold current off Ocean Beach means surfers need wetsuits.2 Since April 12, 2025, two miles of the former Upper Great Highway behind the beach have been Sunset Dunes, a park that Rec and Park calls the largest pedestrian conversion project in the city.5

Andytown's founders opened their first shop a few blocks from their home in the Outer Sunset.6 Its café at 3655 Lawton Street opens daily 07:00–17:00, and its Snowy Plover mixes espresso, brown sugar syrup and iced sparkling water under whipped cream, named for the little birds of Ocean Beach.3 Java Beach Cafe at 1396 La Playa, by the N Judah loop, opens daily at 06:30.

At 4033 Judah Street, Trouble Coffee served for 15 years and is credited with helping start the toast trend. After Damn Fine Coffee closed there in October 2025, Black Jet Bakery of Bernal Heights planned its second shop, Black Jet Luncheonette, for the 325-square-foot space.7
