The Mission takes its name from Mission Dolores, founded by Padre Francisco Palóu in 1776, and it is often warmer and sunnier than other parts of San Francisco because its location shields it from the fog and wind that come in from the west.1 Its two café streets differ: the Valencia corridor, roughly 15th to 22nd Street, is a strip of restaurants, bars and galleries, while 24th Street, known as Calle 24, anchors a Latino Cultural District and many of the neighborhood's murals.1

San Francisco's third-wave roasters grew up here. Ritual Coffee Roasters opened at 1026 Valencia Street in May 2005, and Jeremy Tooker, one of its two founders, left to start Four Barrel Coffee on the same street in 2008.23 Valencia has more cafés than any other street in the Mission, with 24th Street second.

Local tip: Many Valencia Street cafés close by 16:00 or 17:00. For a coffee after 18:00, Ritual at 1026 Valencia is open until 19:00 (20:00 Friday to Sunday) and Dolores Outpost at 690 Guerrero until 20:00 daily.
