The first coffee of the day in San Francisco comes from donut and bagel counters more than from roasters. Uncle Benny’s Donut & Bagel at 2049 Irving Street opens at 04:00 every day, on the Central Sunset’s Irving Street shopping strip between 19th and 27th Avenue.1 An hour later, Martha & Bros. Coffee Co. at 3850 24th Street in Noe Valley unlocks at 05:00, Sundays included.

Many California donut shops trace back to Ted Ngoy, a Cambodian refugee who bought Christy’s Donuts in La Habra in 1977 and by 1987 had about 32 shops, many leased to relatives and other Cambodian refugees.2 Within San Francisco, Bernal Heights and Glen Park has the most cafés open by 06:00, with the Richmond second.

Local tip: Sunday is the hardest morning, since most 06:00 openers start later; Martha & Bros. on 24th Street still opens at 05:00 and Uncle Benny’s on Irving Street at 04:00.

On weekdays the N Judah has 24-hour service, while the K, L, M and T Metro lines start at 06:00. Through the small hours, Owl buses take over from 00:00, or from 22:00 on the L line.4

In summer a sunrise coffee usually comes under grey skies: fog peaks from June to September, and the marine layer tends to hold until about noon, when the morning sun has warmed the land.5
