Wi-Fi in a San Francisco café is the owner’s call, and some well-known bars opt out. Four Barrel Coffee on Valencia Street had never offered Wi-Fi when CBS visited in 2011: the only outlet for laptops was a fake one stenciled on the wall, and owner Jeremy Tooker said the narrow tables for two were meant to make couples talk.1 The company does not provide free Wi-Fi or power for laptops.2
Cafés with Wi-Fi are spread thickest in the Richmond and the Mission, which rank level, with Nob Hill and Russian Hill close behind and North Beach and Chinatown level with the Haight in a distant fourth. Most of them sit on long neighborhood shopping streets, Geary Boulevard and Polk Street above all.
Local tip: For a long laptop session, go on a weekday morning: midday Saturday is the busiest time for San Francisco’s food and drink businesses.4

Geary Boulevard is the Richmond’s main east–west road and runs all the way downtown.3 Between the 3100 and 3500 blocks, Earth’s Coffee at 3400 Geary, fifty/fifty at 3157 and Cup & Cake Cafe at 3500 all have Wi-Fi. Farther out, Alushe Coffee Bar at 4201 Geary opens weekdays 07:00–18:00, House of Bagels at 5030 Geary serves daily 06:30–15:00, and Cafe Enchante at 6157 Geary opens daily 07:15–17:00.
Sweet Mango at 5217 Geary takes cash only. One block north, Cafe la Flore at 1032 Clement Street opens at 07:00 every day and closes at 17:00 from Wednesday to Saturday, ilana Coffee is at 2314 Clement, and Garden House Cafe at 3117 Clement.
Polk Street has Wi-Fi cafés along much of its length, from Moka Coffee at 1605 Polk and Up For Dayz at 1801 to Fueling Station at 2436 Polk, which opens daily 07:00–18:00.
Up the hill, Another Cafe at 1191 Pine Street stays open until 20:00 daily, and Joy’s Place at 611 Post Street closes at 20:00 on weekdays. Hideaway Cafe at 850 Jones Street, open daily 08:00–14:00, pairs its Wi-Fi with specialty coffee.
In the Mission, Atlas Cafe at 3049 20th Street, Maxfield’s House of Caffeine at 398 Dolores Street, Robin’s Cafe at 3153 17th Street and Marigold Cafe at 2681 21st Street all have Wi-Fi. Carlin’s Cafe at 298 Valencia Street and Temo’s Coffee at 3000 24th Street both open at 06:30 from Monday to Saturday.
Timing matters as much as the network. Square’s sales data shows midday Saturday as the busiest time for the city’s food and drink businesses, and coffee shops see later spikes on weekends.4
About two-thirds of the Wi-Fi cafés with posted hours are closed by 18:00 every day. The exceptions run late: Grove To-Go at 692 Mission Street serves daily 07:30–20:30, Coffee to the People at 1206 Masonic Avenue opens daily 06:00–20:00, and Doppio Cafe at 1551 Mission Street stays open until 20:00 from Thursday to Sunday.
