Hayes Valley took its present shape after an earthquake. The elevated Central Freeway, damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, was closed and later torn down after local campaigning, and in 2005 a rebuilt section was made to end at Market Street, with tree-lined Octavia Boulevard running north through the neighborhood.1

Boutiques, restaurants and shops now fill Hayes Street, roughly between Franklin and Webster streets.1 East of Franklin, the Civic Center holds City Hall, completed in 1915, the War Memorial Opera House, where the UN Charter was signed in 1945, and Davies Symphony Hall, added in 1980.2

Local tip: On Sunday most Civic Center cafés are shut; walk west to Hayes Valley, where Ritual on Octavia Street and La Boulangerie on Hayes Street open every day.
