Fortitude Valley sits on low ground 1.6 km northeast of the CBD. It takes its name from the Fortitude, the ship that brought Scottish immigrants in 1849 on the Rev. John Dunmore Lang's promise of free land; denied that land, some of them settled here.1 The McWhirters department store anchored its shopping strip from the early 1900s to the 1960s.1

In 2005 the Valley became Australia's first Special Entertainment Precinct, known for its nightclubs, bars and live music, and BIGSOUND takes over its venues each September.1 By day it is a coffee suburb, with the Merlo family's first roasting house on McLachlan Street and cafés around James Street, Wandoo Street and Ann Street.

Local tip: For a Sunday coffee in the Valley, go to Wandoo Street or McLachlan Street: Bellissimo opens at 06:00 and the Merlo torrefazione at 07:30.
