New Farm fills a river peninsula about 2 km east of the CBD. It is named for the farm Commandant Patrick Logan set up there in 1827 for the Moreton Bay penal colony, and Brunswick Street runs up its center from northwest to southeast.1 In 2011 it was the most densely populated suburb in Greater Brisbane, with about 5,862 people per square kilometer.1

Coffee clusters in two places: on Merthyr Road around the Merthyr Village shops, and along Brunswick Street toward New Farm Park. Unlike the CBD's, New Farm's cafés open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Local tip: Come on a Saturday between mid-October and early November, when the jacarandas are out in New Farm Park and the farmers market runs at the Powerhouse from 06:00.

At its eastern end, the Brisbane Powerhouse fills the former tramway power station, built in 1927–28 and decommissioned in 1971.5 The Jan Powers Farmers Market sets up there on Saturdays from 06:00 to 12:00, with more than 120 stalls.8
