Footpath tables on Boundary and Oxford Streets, back-lane courtyards and a dry, sunny winter.

A table on a Brisbane footpath (sidewalk) needs a council permit. Under the Footpath Dining Local Law 2011, a café with a food business licence must apply before setting chairs on public pavement, and the Queen Street, Brunswick Street and Chinatown malls run on a separate outdoor dining permit; seating on private land, such as a forecourt or courtyard, needs neither.1
Winter is the outdoor season. At the Bureau of Meteorology's Brisbane station, September averages 3.6 days with at least 1 mm of rain and August 3.9, against 9.6 in February and 10.1 in March.2 Afternoons dry out as well: mean humidity at 15:00 falls to 43% in August, from 59% in February.2
Local tip: Take an outdoor table before 10:00 or after 16:00, outside the hours of strongest UV, and save long terrace mornings for August and September, the months with the fewest rainy days.24
Where these cafés are: West End & Highgate Hill (25), Milton & Toowong (21), CBD (14), Woolloongabba & East Brisbane (14), Bardon & Ashgrove (8), Windsor & Wilston (8), South Brisbane & South Bank (8), Kelvin Grove & Herston (6), Newstead & Teneriffe (5), Paddington & Red Hill (5), New Farm (5), Albion & Hamilton (5), Bulimba & Hawthorne (4), Coorparoo & Norman Park (4), Fortitude Valley (3), St Lucia (3).

The council charges for pavement by the square meter. As of October 2026, a new footpath dining permit costs A$1,099.70, plus an occupation fee of A$596.15 per square meter in the CBD (Zone A), A$285 in Zone B and A$171.30 everywhere else.1 Zone B is a list of shopping strips, among them Boundary Street in West End, Fortitude Valley, Spring Hill, Given Terrace in Paddington, Park Road in Milton, Racecourse Road in Hamilton, Oxford Street in Bulimba, Logan Road at Stones Corner and Kedron Brook Road in Wilston.1
Several of those strips have cafés with seats outside. Alphabet at 243 Boundary Street and Posto at 235 are close together, Park Bench Espresso Bar and Wholly Crumpets are on Oxford Street at 133 and 140, Stones Throw is at 371 Logan Road and Cafe KuTea at 45 Kedron Brook Road. The malls have stricter rules: umbrellas need 2.3 m of clearance, furniture is packed away daily where required, and cheap molded plastic chairs and tables are banned.1
West End has the most cafés with outdoor seating, followed by Milton & Toowong, then Woolloongabba and the CBD. In West End the tables reach into the back streets: Little Roger is at 35 Tondara Lane, GoodGood at 24 Beesley Street and Falalalah at 193 Melbourne Street.
In Milton, one café occupies a converted bomb shelter. Bunker, at 21 Railway Terrace, has a vine-covered exterior, sells beans and casks of Colombian cold brew, and is dog-friendly, with organic dog treats.3 Elsewhere in Milton & Toowong, I DO at 28 Grimes Street opens from Tuesday to Sunday, If You Say So is at 88 Gailey Road and Scatter Bean at 7 Princess Street.
On the southside, Martha Street has In A Pickle at number 2, open from Tuesday to Saturday, and Picnic on Martha at number 12.
Cool weather does not mean weak sun. Brisbane's UV index stays at 3 or above through winter, levels of up to 6 are not uncommon, and a Metro North Health dermatologist advises keeping out of direct sun from 10:00 to 16:00.4 In summer the early table is also the cooler one, since January days average a 30.4 °C maximum.2
A few terraces stay open into the evening, after the UV has dropped. Bardon Shed Coffee serves daily from 06:00 to 19:00, Upbeat in St Lucia from 06:30 to 18:30, and The Menagerie at 8 Carraway Street until 20:00 from Wednesday to Friday.
About seven in ten cafés with outdoor seating open on Sundays, and some start at dawn. Nurse Station Coffee and Juice Bar opens at 05:00 on both weekend days, and Campos Piccolo on Ann Street and Lost Bean on Grey Street open at 06:00.
Others keep weekend-only or short hours. Fiddle Leaf at 7 Corio Street opens only from Friday to Sunday, 06:30 to 13:30, while Goodfolk Cafe at 58 Rainworth Road serves every day from 07:00 to 14:30.
