West End lies 2.9 km southwest of the CBD, and with South Brisbane and Highgate Hill it forms a peninsula in a loop of the river.1 Its Aboriginal name, Kurilpa, means place of the water rat.1 Boundary Street, Vulture Street and Wellington Road once marked the edge of the Town of Brisbane, and police kept Jagera and Turrbal people out of the town at night and on Sundays.1

Two strips carry most of the coffee. Montague Road follows the river past old industrial lots, while Boundary Street and Vulture Street are the shopping streets. West End's cafés rarely close for a whole weekend, and several on Montague Road open at 05:00 or 05:30.

Local tip: Pair a Saturday at the West End Markets in Davies Park with an early espresso on Montague Road, where Ash+Monties opens at 05:30 and Veneziano at 06:00.

Montague Road, from gasworks to coolest street

Industry arrived on Montague Road in the 1880s, with the South Brisbane Gas Works, sawmills and a steam joinery, and the suburb's industrial base still runs along it down to Riverside Drive.1 In November 2025 Time Out ranked the road sixth on its list of the world's coolest streets, describing a once-sleepy industrial strip with the Thomas Dixon Centre, home of Queensland Ballet, and links to South Bank and QAGOMA.2

Veneziano Coffee at 369 Montague Road reopened after renovations with its roaster on view.3 It opens at 06:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and at 07:00 on Sundays. Cordeaux Social Club, at 462 Montague Road, was among the cafés Time Out named on the street, along with Coffee Mentality and the pastry shop Superthing.2

Boundary Street, Vulture Street and Greek West End

West End has traditionally been home to Brisbane's largest Greek community: by 1980 an estimated 75% of the city's Greek population lived here, and 5.2% of residents still reported Greek ancestry in 2011.1 The suburb's population nearly doubled between 2011 and 2021, from 8,061 to 14,730.1

On Boundary Street, Alphabet at number 243, known for its sweet treats, opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.3 Morning After, at 57 Vulture Street, is run by a mother and son and splits its menu into morning dishes and an after menu served from 11:00 to 15:00.4 Blackstar Coffee on Thomas Street belongs to a roaster that has operated since 2007 and plants three trees for every kilo it sells.5

Saturdays at Davies Park, and Highgate Hill

Davies Park, on the riverside, hosts the West End Markets every Saturday, one of the largest farmers' markets in Greater Brisbane.12 Saturday is the day almost every café here opens, while about two in five close on Sundays. Café Disco, at 69 Hardgrave Road, mixes Australian brunch dishes with Bangladeshi flavors and opens Wednesday to Sunday until 14:00.4

Uphill to the south, Highgate Hill rises to 64 m along Dornoch Terrace, and a small park at the summit looks over the city and catches a cool breeze in summer.6 Trams climbed Gladstone Road from 1902, and by 1929 the hill counted among Brisbane's dress circles.6
