Newstead lies 3.6 km northeast of the CBD, between Breakfast Creek and the river, and timber yards, asbestos works, wharves and wool stores once filled its eastern side.1 Next door in Teneriffe the first wool store went up in 1909, and the conversion of stores and factories into apartments has since turned a riverside industrial hub into a mostly high-density residential area.2
Coffee companies from elsewhere have opened flagships here. Single O opened its first Brisbane coffee bar on Austin Street in 2023, and Toby's Estate opened on Longland Street in May 2024.34 Coffee costs more than in most of the city: in October 2026 a small flat white averaged A$5.54 in Teneriffe, the second-highest suburb average in Brisbane.5
Local tip: For a tasting rather than a takeaway, Toby's Estate on Longland Street runs free monthly sessions on origins and processing; for the earliest cup, El Cafe on Commercial Road opens at 04:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Wool stores on Vernon Terrace and Macquarie Street
Three more stores followed the first by 1915 and nine more after that, the last two in the 1950s. The Australian Estates store, opened in 1927 by the Duke and Duchess of York, had the largest showroom in Australia and held 24,000 bales.2 Heritage-listed stores line Vernon Terrace, among them Mactaggarts at number 53, and Macquarie Street, including the Australian Estates No. 2 Store at 24 and the Elder Smith store at 64.2
Some cafés now share those addresses. Vinty Bean is at 53 Vernon Terrace, open daily from 06:00 to 14:00, and UNBEARABLE Bagels & Coffee is at number 39. Kin, at 24 Macquarie Street, uses Cuban single-origin beans and takes a dollar off your coffee if you bring a cup or dine in.6
Roaster flagships on Longland, Austin and Proe Streets
Toby's Estate's Brisbane flagship at 1/33 Longland Street, designed by the Melbourne architects Russell & George, is built around a round bar holding an espresso bar, a filter bar and a training bar.4 It opens daily from 06:30 to 14:00 and runs free monthly tastings on origins, processing and technique.7
Single O's bar at 16 Austin Street has a self-serve batch-brew station, and its signature blend is Reservoir. Industry Beans at 18 Proe Street is known for bubble coffee, cold brew with tapioca pearls, and pours cocktails and wine.3 Nodo, whose doughnut cafés are all gluten-free, began in Newstead, and its original shop serves brunch at the table.6
Commercial Road and the 04:00 start
Electric trams ran along Commercial Road from 1897 until December 1962.2 The road now has some of the earliest coffee in the city: El Cafe at number 27 opens at 04:00 from Monday to Saturday, and Fraser's Newstead at number 12 at 05:30 on weekdays. The Woolshed. at 15 Helen Street and a Merlo café also open at 05:30, and Caffeine at 113 Commercial Road at 06:00.
More than half the cafés here are open by 06:00 on weekdays, and almost none close on Sundays. Croix Croissant at 68 Commercial Road opens at 07:00 every day.
Gasworks Plaza and Newstead House
The No. 2 gasholder on Skyring Terrace is what remains of the Newstead Gasworks, established in 1887 as Brisbane's second gasworks; the heritage-listed site now holds shops, a supermarket and a public plaza inside the old holder.1 Gasworks Plaza, at 76 Skyring Terrace, has more than 300 car parks and is about 15 minutes' walk from Bowen Hills station.8 The café yolk, at the same address, opens daily from 07:00 to 15:00.
Newstead House, built in 1846 by the grazier Patrick Leslie, is Brisbane's oldest surviving home, and its former gardens are now the public Newstead Park.1 On the river, Teneriffe's ferry wharf is served by the CityCat.2
