Woolloongabba lies 3 km by road south of the city, around the Fiveways, where Stanley Street, Main Street, Logan Road and Ipswich Road meet.1 Sources disagree on the name: proposed meanings include "whirling waters" and "fight talk place."1 The suburb's landmark is the Brisbane Cricket Ground, the Gabba, where the first match was played on 19 December 1896.2
The Gabba holds about 37,000 and is home to the Brisbane Lions and the Brisbane Heat. In March 2025 a 63,000-seat stadium was announced for Victoria Park, after which the Gabba is to be demolished and its site used for housing.2 Around it, the cafés lean toward roasters and early starts, from Manilla Street in East Brisbane to Logan Road at Stones Corner.
Local tip: Before an evening match at the Gabba, Hey Joe Coffee Co. on Lytton Road serves until 22:00 from Wednesday to Sunday, and Pawpaw on Stanley Street does dinner from Wednesday to Saturday.
