South Brisbane faces the CBD across the river, 1.6 km to the southwest.1 Its first street was Stanley Quay, later Stanley Street, and in the February 1893 flood the water rose up to 4.8 meters here; one account described Stanley Street as "one long stretch of ruin and desolation."1
The riverbank has been rebuilt twice since. The Queensland Cultural Centre went up in the 1970s, and after World Expo 88 a public campaign turned the Expo site into the 17.5-hectare South Bank Parklands, which opened on 20 June 1992.2 Coffee follows the museums and the park, from cafés inside the State Library and the Gallery of Modern Art to the restaurant blocks of Grey Street.
Local tip: Visit GOMA on a weekend morning: its Café Bistro opens at 08:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, two hours earlier than on weekdays, and The Library Cafe on the same Stanley Place is open from 07:30.

Coffee at the State Library and GOMA
The Cultural Centre groups the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum, Queensland Performing Arts Centre and State Library of Queensland, and the Gallery of Modern Art joined them on Kurilpa Point on 2 December 2006.23 GOMA, designed by the Sydney firm Architectus, has more than 25,000 square meters of floor space.3
The Library Cafe on Stanley Place has Wi-Fi and serves daily from 07:30 to 18:00. GOMA Café Bistro starts later, at 10:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, and closes at 16:45. The Kurilpa Bridge, for walkers and cyclists, crosses from here to the CBD.1
Fish Lane, Grey Street and Lune
Fish Lane began in the 1800s as Soda Water Lane and was renamed in 1906 for George Fish, an alderman whose steam laundry operated there from 1893 to 1921.4 The Expo 88 redevelopment removed nearly all of South Brisbane's service lanes; Fish Lane and Fleet Lane are the only ones left. Aria Property Group began reworking the lane in 2014 and set up the Fish Lane Arts Precinct in 2019.4
Melbourne's Lune Croissanterie chose Manning Street for its first shop outside its home city, opening in August 2021 at 13–17 Manning Street, with croissants made in a climate-controlled glass cube.5 It opens at 07:30 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends. Grey Street and the parallel Little Stanley Street hold many of the suburb's restaurants; Sips O'clock is at 75 Grey Street and Denim Co. at 9A Little Stanley Street.1
South Bank Parklands: lagoon, arbour and late coffee
The parklands' Streets Beach is a lagoon of 2,000 square meters, ringed by sand and patrolled by lifeguards all year.2 The Grand Arbour, 443 curling steel columns covered in bougainvillea, runs for a kilometer from Vulture Street to the Cultural Forecourt, and the 60-meter Wheel of Brisbane has turned here since 2008.2 CityCats call at the South Bank wharf.6
For coffee after dark, Otti at 218 Vulture Street serves daily from 06:30 to 21:00.
Early coffee and Musgrave Park
Lost Bean is first, at 05:45 on weekdays and 06:00 at weekends. Coffee Mentality at 44 Montague Road, Espresso Garage and Mi Casa Cafe open at 06:00; Coffee Mentality's beans come from its own roastery in Woolloongabba.7 Almost every café here opens on at least one day of the weekend.
Musgrave Park was set aside as the South Brisbane Recreation Reserve in 1856 and has long been a gathering place for the Murri peoples of south-east Queensland. The annual Paniyiri Greek festival has been held there since 1976.1
