Brisbane's CBD fills a bend of the river, on a grid named after the House of Hanover: streets for female royals such as Ann, Adelaide and Elizabeth run parallel to Queen Street, and those for male royals such as George, William and Albert cross them.1 Queen Street holds the largest pedestrian mall in the city.1 Café addresses gather on George, Edward, Charlotte and Adelaide Streets, a few blocks from the mall.
Coffee here runs on office time. Almost every café is open by 07:00 on weekdays, most have closed by mid-afternoon, and only about one in five opens on Sundays. Time Out's 2026 picks for best award-winning café and best CBD coffee spot are a few blocks apart on Charlotte Street.2
Local tip: On a Saturday, head for Edward or Adelaide Street rather than the office towers: Le Bon Chox at 104 Edward Street opens at 06:30 and The Hideout on Adelaide at 07:30.

Coffee Anthology and John Mills Himself on Charlotte Street
Coffee Anthology moved from its first café on Margaret Street to 155 Charlotte Street, behind an 1890s heritage-listed facade at the Midtown Centre. It pours beans from rotating roasters such as Padre, Proud Mary, Almanac and Passport.3 The café ranked eighth in The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops in 2025 and slipped to 29th in 2026.4
John Mills Himself, at 40 Charlotte Street, occupies the base of the 1917 heritage-listed warehouse it is named after, with exposed red brick and timber bar stools.5 The entrance is on Elizabeth Street, and three tandem grinders feed a house blend and single origins.2
Laneways off Elizabeth Street and Burnett Lane
Strauss sits down a laneway off 189 Elizabeth Street, pouring its own house blend, rotating single origins for espresso and long blacks, and selling bottled cold brew.52 Its brunch menu is old-school, and three of its smoothies can take a shot of espresso.2
In Lower Burnett Lane, Brew Café and Wine Bar, which Time Out calls Brisbane's oldest laneway bar, serves espresso by day and becomes a wine bar at night, with fairy lights and a DJ booth. Felix For Goodness, at 50 Burnett Lane, does brunch with hints of Italian and Japanese cooking.5
Early starts and quiet weekends in the CBD
Sugar n Spice opens first, at 05:00 on weekdays. Bar Metzo, Lil Luca at 123 Albert Street, Marco at 140 Creek Street, Polo and Pallet Cafe follow at 06:00. Lab Speciality Coffee Co also starts at 06:00, Monday to Saturday, but is done by 13:00, and Espresso Engine, Espresso Legends and Edward Specialty Coffee at 275 Edward Street are pouring by 06:30.
Weekends take more planning. Le Bon Chox at 104 Edward Street opens at 06:30 on Saturdays and Sundays, The Hideout Specialty Coffee on Adelaide at 340 Adelaide Street at 07:30, and Pallet Cafe keeps its 06:00 start every day. For coffee after work, jak+hill serves until 20:30 daily, and Sparrow + Finch stays open until 20:00 on Fridays.
Queen's Wharf and the City Botanic Gardens
The riverfront at the southern end of William Street has been rebuilt as Queen's Wharf. Its staged opening began on 29 August 2024, with about 50 cafés, bars and restaurants, a Sky Deck open around the clock and the Neville Bonner Bridge across to South Bank.6 The precinct takes in 11 state-owned heritage sites, nine of them open to the public.6
The City Botanic Gardens are probably where Australia's first jacaranda was planted, in 1864, from seeds the gardens' director Walter Hill obtained from a ship that had called in South America.7 Each year from mid-October to early November the purple blooms return to the heritage paths.8
