Queensland came to meat-free eating slowly. In Roy Morgan's 2016 figures, 9.2% of Queenslanders ate all or almost all vegetarian food, the lowest share of any state, against 11.2% across Australia and 14.4% in Sydney.1 In Brisbane, most cafés with vegan dishes are ordinary cafés and roasters rather than plant-based kitchens, and they cluster in Milton & Toowong and in Albion & Hamilton.
The Green Edge in Windsor covers everything at once. It runs as a vegan bistro, deli and grocer; its pantry stocks plant-based meat and cheese, mock eggs and ice cream, while the café cooks nachos, curries, burgers, toasties and breakfast muffins.23 It opens at 06:00 every day and stays open until 20:00 from Thursday to Sunday.
