New Town, about 4 km north of the city center, is generally considered Hobart's oldest suburb: it was settled about a week after Sullivans Cove, and the first free settlers landed at New Town Bay.1 Pitt Farm, described as the second oldest farmhouse in Australia, still stands there.1 Its main road, New Town Road, carries on from Elizabeth Street toward Glenorchy.1
Moonah, about 5 km north of the center, belongs to the City of Glenorchy, and Main Road is its spine, running from Derwent Park to New Town along a former tram route.2 The name has been in use since 1895 and is believed to come from an Aboriginal word for gum tree.2 Industrial zones line Charles Street, Sunderland Street and Gormanston Road, and that is where several of Hobart's roasters work.23
Local tip: On a Sunday, Jackman & McRoss on Cross Street (07:00–17:00) and Tracks Cafe on Bellevue Parade (09:00–17:00) are both open, as they are every day of the week.
