Most of Hobart's cafés are in the city center, on a handful of streets: Elizabeth, Murray, Collins, Liverpool and Bathurst. Elizabeth Street itself is cut by a one-block pedestrian mall between Collins and Liverpool Streets, created in the 1970s over an old crossing of the Hobart Rivulet, which was later channelled and buried.1
A lot of the coffee is poured off the main streets, in lanes, arcades and the short run of Criterion Street. Villino, the Tasmanian roaster that opened its flagship café on Criterion Street in 2007, roasts its beans fresh every day at a roastery in Moonah.2
Local tip: For a Villino coffee without waiting for a table, go to Ecru, the takeaway window off Criterion Street that pours the same beans.2

Staple Coffee is a compact room at 2 Bidencopes Lane, a lane covered in street art.3 It serves espresso and takeaway cups with gluten-free sweets and Pigeon Whole bagels.4 Picnic Cafe is in Mathers Lane, and Two Folk Espresso, in the Bank Arcade on Liverpool Street, has been called one of the city's espresso-based pillars.3 Beneath the arcade lie the remains of Hobart's oldest known building, which was also the site of its first shop.5
The Cat and Fiddle Arcade opened on 31 July 1962. Its name goes back to an inn in an 1817 alley, now Elizabeth Lane, flagged by a painting of a yellow cat and fiddle, and its musical clock plays Hey Diddle Diddle every hour.6 Yellow Bernard, a tiny bar inside the arcade at 1/109 Collins Street, uses Gridlock beans, its Project Yellow house blend and Fast Eddie cold brew.4
Criterion Street fits Villino, Criterion Street Cafe and Waffle Day into a short block. Villino's flagship pours its Synergy blend, described as bright and sweet with chocolate and citrus notes, and sells single-origin bags from Honduras, Ethiopia and Ecuador.7 Criterion Street Cafe, at number 10, is owned by Bec Sinclair; it runs a bright pink La Marzocco and a short breakfast menu known for its corn fritters.7
Ecru, Villino's hole-in-the-wall sibling, is a takeaway option with laneway access.2 It opens at 06:30 on weekdays and closes at 14:00, while Villino itself keeps 08:00–16:30 from Monday to Friday and 09:00–15:00 on Saturday.
Elizabeth Street has the longest run of cafés in the center. Cafe Trocadero, at 22, opens at 06:00 on weekdays, and Zimmah Coffee, at 18, at 06:45. Further up, Somewhere Coffee Bar is run by Brian Lam, who found coffee while working in Europe; it sources from specialty roasteries around the world and holds tasting nights and pop-up roaster takeovers.7
The Stagg, at 138, is a quick stop with a handful of seats, toasties and egg and bacon rolls.7 At 271, Wide Awake Specialty Coffee uses Padre's Lucky Boy blend for espresso and rotates single origins for filter.4 Around the corner on Liverpool Street, Pilgrim Coffee opens at 06:30 on weekdays and pours a decaf from Shake a Leg Jr with notes of orange juice, red currants and caramel.7
Much of the center runs on office hours. Next Door Coffee on Collins Street closes at 14:00 on weekdays, Hamlet Cafe on Molle Street and Zimmah at 14:30, and several close on Sundays. For a late coffee, Medici Pizzeria & Espresso on Murray Street serves daily until 21:00, and Gotchahouse opens daily 10:00–17:00.
On weekends the early openers shrink to mornings: Pilgrim keeps 07:30–13:00, and Zimmah and Ecru open from 08:00 on Sunday until 13:00. In October 2026 a flat white in the 7000 postcode averaged A$5.13, with a small at A$5.04 and a large at A$6.15; plant milk added about 80 cents.8
