Sandy Bay lies immediately south of the city center and is home to the University of Tasmania's Hobart campus, with plenty of student housing around it; the 2021 census counted 12,315 residents.1 Much of the land was granted to Norfolk Islanders after they were moved to Van Diemen's Land in 1808, and the long beach was an early horse-racing venue.1
Wrest Point, Australia's first legal casino, opened here in 1973 on the site of the former Wrest Point Riviera hotel.1 Sandy Bay Road, which runs from Davey Street in the city to the Kingborough boundary at Taroona, carries most of the cafés.1 Regent Street bypasses the main shopping district.1 Smaller café clusters sit on Gregory Street, King Street and Magnet Court.
Local tip: The Sandy Bay Bakery & Cafe at 166–168 Sandy Bay Road opens at 06:30 on weekends too, earlier than anywhere else in the suburb.
