Hobart was founded on 20 February 1804 at Sullivans Cove, on the estuary of the River Derwent, after a first camp at Risdon Cove the year before; its palawa kani name, nipaluna, was first written down in 1831.1 The city sits under kunanyi / Mount Wellington, which rises to 1,271 m behind it.1
Salamanca Market opened in the summer of 1972 with 15 stalls beside the sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place, and Machine Laundry Cafe has worked in Salamanca Square since 1997.23 Villino opened its first café in 2007 and roasts daily in Moonah, north of the center, where Shake and Lottie Lane roast too.45 Pilgrim Coffee, gutted by a fire in 2018, reopened in late 2020.3
A flat white in Hobart averaged A$5.14 in October 2026, level with the national average, and most cafés charged between A$4.60 and A$5.50.6 The city-center postcode, 7000, averaged A$5.13, while Sandy Bay came in lower, at A$4.75.78
Elizabeth Street ties three of these areas together: it crosses the city center, carries North Hobart's restaurant strip and continues as New Town Road toward Glenorchy.1415 Moonah, about 5 km north of the center, is strung along Main Road.16

The cup size moves the price more than the drink does. In October 2026 a small flat white averaged A$5.06 in Hobart and a large one A$6.22, and swapping to oat, soy or almond milk added about 88 cents.6 Filter is easy to find at the specialty end: Somewhere Coffee Bar on Elizabeth Street brews pour-over and syphon alongside espresso.9
Plenty of what you drink is roasted on the island. Abercrombie Coffee in North Hobart pours a Tasmanian-roasted Villino house blend, and The Stagg on Elizabeth Street serves its own blend from Black Velvet with guest coffees from Lottie Lane.109 Mainland roasters fill other hoppers: Sunbear on Collins Street runs Coffee Supreme's South Blend, and Pilgrim Coffee keeps up to ten beans in rotation, from St Ali, Reuben Hills, Proud Mary and Market Lane among others.109
Since 1 October 2026 cafés may not add a surcharge to eftpos, Mastercard or Visa payments, and American Express, UnionPay and PayPal have dropped theirs as well; weekend and public holiday surcharges are a separate charge and can still appear.11 Tipping is optional, since Australian hospitality staff earn at least the minimum wage, and an automatic service charge is allowed only if you are told beforehand and can opt out.12
