Sitting outside in Hobart takes some timing. January averages a top of 22.7°C and July 12.6°C, and the city gets about 5.9 hours of sunshine a day, the fewest of any Australian capital.1 Cafés with courtyards, terraces or footpath tables are spread across the CBD, the old streets of Battery Point, Salamanca Square and the hillside suburbs of West and South Hobart.

The CBD has the largest share of them, with Battery Point and West & South Hobart each holding about a quarter. Most serve breakfast and lunch and are closed by mid-afternoon: Hearth in Battery Point finishes at 14:30 and Bear With Me on Macquarie Street at 15:00, so a sunny lunch outside means arriving before 14:00.

Local tip: Pair a coffee with the Hobart Rivulet walk: Hamlet’s end on Molle Street has time-limited parking, and the Cascade Brewery end has parking too.7

Where these cafés are: Hobart CBD (5), West & South Hobart (4), Battery Point (4), Salamanca & Waterfront (2).

Battery Point and Hampden Road

Battery Point, Hobart’s first suburb, was named in 1818 after the Mulgrave Battery, a defense post guarding the port.2 Whaling captain James Kelly cut Kelly’s Steps into the cliff in 1839 as a shortcut up from Salamanca Place.2

Hampden Road is the suburb’s café street. Jackman and McRoss, at number 57, is in a double-fronted red-brick heritage building and is known for scallop pies with Tasmanian scallops in a light curry sauce.2 It is the original of the bakery’s outlets, and when the sun is out people eat outside.3 Cibo e Vino is at 45 Hampden Road, and Hearth, also in Battery Point, opens daily 07:30–14:30.

Salamanca Square on market day

Parklane Espresso and Rendezvous Cafe share an address at 3 Salamanca Square, a short walk from the Georgian buildings of Salamanca Place.1 Parklane’s daily blend comes from Zimmah, a Hobart roaster,4 and Rendezvous Cafe has vegan options.

Salamanca Market, owned and run by the City of Hobart, trades every Saturday from 08:30 to 15:00.5 For an outside table without the market crowd, go on a weekday.

West and South Hobart, under the mountain

Above the CBD the streets climb toward kunanyi / Mount Wellington, the 1,271 m mountain that fills the city’s skyline.1 Pigeon Hole at 93 Goulburn Street, West Hobart, was started by farmers Richard and Belinda Weston to show off produce from their own farm, and it offers four non-dairy milks.3 Its coffee comes from Villino.6 It opens Monday to Saturday 07:30–16:30.

In South Hobart, Bear With Me at 399 Macquarie Street opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends. The Lansdowne Cafe at 68 Lansdowne Crescent also trades on Sunday, 08:00–14:00, while Rivulet Cafe on Anglesea Street keeps weekday hours, 08:30–15:30.

Courtyards and footpaths in the CBD

Hamlet at 40 Molle Street sits beside Linear Park at the city end of the Hobart Rivulet track, a 2.7 km walk with a gentle uphill grade past the World Heritage-listed Female Factory toward the Cascade Brewery.7 Founded by Emily Briffa in 2016, the café is a social enterprise training people who face barriers to work in hospitality.8 It opens weekdays 07:30–14:30.

Criterion Street Cafe at number 10 opens seven days and runs a pink La Marzocco, with beans from Coffee Supreme, St Ali and Villino.9 The Stagg at 138 Elizabeth Street pours a house blend roasted by Black Velvet and guest coffees from Lottie Lane.9 For something more formal, Deco Lounge in The Tasman’s Art Deco wing on Murray Street serves a weekend high tea of Tasmanian produce; bookings are essential.10
