Moonee Ponds sits 7 km north-west of the CBD, and Puckle Street, its main shopping street, runs from Moonee Ponds Junction down to the Craigieburn line station.1 Queens Park, where Burke and Wills camped in 1860, has a lake and gardens laid out from the 1880s.1
Ascot Vale, next door, is about 10 minutes by train from the City Loop. Tram route 59 takes Mount Alexander Road and route 57 runs along Union Road, one boundary of the old Temperance Township Estate, sold with restrictions on alcohol, though hotels soon rose on its outside corners.2 The Royal Melbourne Showgrounds are here too, next to Flemington Racecourse.2
Local tip: Carry a takeaway to the lake at Queens Park by day; after dark, Brunetti Classico on Puckle Street is open until 21:00 from Monday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Brunetti Classico, at 17–23 Puckle Street, shares a Pasta Tuesday offer with its Carlton store.8 It stays open until 21:00 from Monday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, which makes it a useful address for coffee after dark.
Darling Street Espresso, on Athol Street, is a family-run café in a renovated corner store, with a back courtyard that takes prams and dogs.4 Its coffee comes from Industry Beans, and in 2019 Broadsheet noted a split shot and a three-coffee tasting paddle on the list.34 Owners Duncan and Helen McKenzie then drew much of the produce from a kitchen garden.3
20 Young Street Cafe and Catering is reached down Penny Lane. Broadsheet singled out its 14-sandwich menu in 2019, naming the Paolo, a chicken schnitzel sandwich, as the one to order.3
Brother Hen has a literal claim on its name: in 2019 Michael Angiolino and Prabh Singh Dhaliwal kept chickens in the back courtyard of the café.3 Its crispy fried eggs and Golden Gaytime baos were the popular orders then, served through a large lunch menu and a cozy back dining room, and it also sells picnic boxes and groceries from the shop.36
Convoy, at 109 Pascoe Vale Road, is listed among the Yolk Venues, alongside Terror Twilight and HiFi in Collingwood. It takes walk-ins only, from 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.7
The Re-Up, on Mount Alexander Road, had been serving since 2017 when Broadsheet described it in 2019: Dukes coffee, floor-to-ceiling windows full of plants, eggs Benedict with 16-hour pulled pork and soft-shell tacos on Tuesdays.3 Mount Alexander Road itself was a major route during the gold rush.1
Old Man Drew, at 359–361 Mount Alexander Road in Ascot Vale, calls itself a café, coffee house and fine food merchant. It is also home to Miss Violets Tea Rooms, which takes reservations for high tea.5 It runs 08:00 to 15:00 on weekdays and until 16:00 at weekends.5 On Union Road, Bang On Bagels at 284 starts earlier, at 07:00 on weekdays and 07:30 at weekends, and has outdoor seats.
