Port Melbourne began as Sandridge, a port linked to the city by rail from 1854, and was renamed in 1884. Bay Street remains its main commercial strip, and Station Pier, once a major arrival point for migrants, still takes liners and ferries.1 Route 109 replaced the old railway as light rail in 1987 and ends at the former station; the suburb is about 3 km from the CBD.1
Albert Park lies 4 km south of the CBD, with route 1 trams on Victoria Avenue, route 12 on Mills Street and route 96 on the former St Kilda line.2 Its lake is the setting for the Australian Grand Prix, run on public roads since 1996, apart from 2020 and 2021.2 Between the two suburbs, cafés follow the shopping streets and the beach road.
Local tip: Tribu Coffee Roasters shuts at noon and lists no Sunday hours, so go before lunch for a cup from the roaster's own shop.
