Elsternwick sits about 9 km south-east of the CBD. Glen Huntly Road is its main strip, with Sandringham line trains stopping beside it and tram route 67 running its length toward the city.1 Classic Cinemas on Gordon Street, a public hall converted to a cinema in 1911, claims to be Melbourne's oldest continuously running picture house, and it hosts the Jewish International Film Festival each November.12

Judaism was named by 17.8% of Elsternwick respondents at the 2016 census, and the Jewish Holocaust Museum is on Selwyn Street.1 That shapes the morning trade: bagels, babka and kosher deli counters share the road with espresso, and a Coles here carries what a local guide described in 2022 as the largest kosher range in the country.6 East of the station the same road runs on through Caulfield toward Glenhuntly.

Local tip: Take the Sandringham line to Elsternwick and start at Goat House beside the station, then walk along Glen Huntly Road to Bissel B at 312–314.

Bagels and deli counters

Bagelicious, on Carre Street, was described in that 2022 local guide as selling bagels in "every variety imaginable".6 Bissel B, at 312–314 Glen Huntly Road, pairs New York-style bagels with Melbourne café habits, and its chefs prepare in-house ingredients daily from local produce.7 It opens at 07:30 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends.

Rustica Cafe Deli, at 362, stocks European and kosher deli items, cheeses and pasta alongside coffee to drink there or carry out, according to a 2020 Time Out guide to the suburb.2

The roastery by the station

Goat House stands next to Elsternwick station at the top of the shopping strip.4 As of 2018 its owners chose fair-trade beans and roasted them on site under the name Fayale, offering six brewing methods from espresso and plunger to pour-over and lever.4

Food has since taken a larger share of the business. Chef Ougustus Edirisinghe, who had bought it about four and a half years earlier, said in 2020 that he wanted "to make the shift from a coffee place to a great food spot".5 Broadsheet's 2024 suburb guide still summed it up with "coffee is their thing".3

Glen Huntly Road's regulars

One Square Espresso Bar, at 272, is where Rapha Tamir of Classic Cinemas sent readers of that 2020 Time Out guide, rating its coffee the best in the area.2 Loco Coffee has changed management without losing its standing, Broadsheet wrote in 2024, calling it a "trusted veteran".3

Carter Lovett, from a group of hospitality veterans, takes its cue from the Victorian era and uses its room well, with a menu of tweaked classics that runs from breakfast to drinks.3 Next of Kin, further along at 546, is the pick for breakfasts that move past the usual Melbourne staples.3

Out to Glenhuntly and Hawthorn Road

Workshop Glenhuntly, at 1146 Glen Huntly Road, is the work of three brothers, Nolan Taing among them, whose parents run Oak Room Cafe in Ashburton. When Broadsheet wrote about it in 2013 the beans came from Coffee Cartel Roasters.8 Whyte Cafe, nearby at 1122, opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 07:30 at weekends.

For an early cup, Coffee Ministry on Hawthorn Road starts at 05:30 from Monday to Saturday and 06:00 on Sunday.
