Budapest’s specialty scene is young next to its coffeehouses. In 2014, Sprudge reported a local consensus that Tamp & Pull, run by Attila Molnár, who placed sixth at the 2009 World Barista Championship, had kick-started specialty coffee in Hungary.1 Espresso Embassy, under a 200-year-old vaulted brick ceiling on Arany János utca, opened in 2013.12 That year its barista Tibor Várady placed sixth at the World Brewers Cup and third at the World AeroPress Championship.1

Fekete, whose name means “black”, began the same year as an 11 m² espresso bar on Múzeum körút.13 Specialty bars here keep office hours: of those with known hours, only Tamp & Pull on Czuczor utca stays open past 18:00, until 19:00 on weekdays, and several close at 16:00 or 17:00.

Local tip: At Goosebumps on Fekete Sas utca, order the Espresso Menü to taste the same coffee as an espresso and with plant milk.8
