Bengaluru (ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು) sits about 920 m up on the Deccan Plateau and has officially used its Kannada name, in place of Bangalore, since 1 November 2014.1 It is the capital of Karnataka, India's biggest coffee-growing state, and the Coffee Board pours its own cup at the India Coffee House on its premises on Ambedkar Road.23 In the coffee house's 50th year, 2023, a ₹22 lakh renovation added espresso and twenty chairs in the outer corridor.3

The everyday drink is filter kaapi (coffee), taken standing at darshinis, self-service tiffin counters, or at the old tiffin rooms of the south. Vidyarthi Bhavan has fed Gandhi Bazaar since 1943, and Brahmin's Coffee Bar opened in Shankarapuram in 1965.45 In October 2024 a darshini coffee cost ₹12–35, after a rise of ₹2–5.2

Specialty coffee arrived on top of that habit. Araku opened its first café in India on Indiranagar's 12th Main, and Maverick and Farmer, which roasts daily in the city with beans from estates including its own Nellikad Estate in Coorg, ran five Bengaluru cafés by June 2026.67 Church Street fits The Caffeine Baar, Matteo, Tribal Brew and one of those Maverick and Farmer cafés into 750 m between Brigade Road and St. Mark's Road.8

How to order kaapi in Bengaluru

At a darshini you pay first. The cashier sits on the customers' side of the counter and sells coupons, and in most darshinis the coffee counter is on the outer edge, facing the road or the footpath, so drinkers spill onto the pavement.9 Hand your coupon to the coffeeman and say what you want.

The orders are short. A "by-two", short for one-by-two, is half a cup; "strong" means more decoction and less milk, "light" the reverse, and "black" is decoction on its own.9 Say "less" for no sugar and "plus" for sugar, or "regular" to leave the mix to the coffeeman. A regular may even get a "half-half", half coffee and half tea on one coupon.9

Darshinis open early for walkers, office workers and auto drivers, and many keep pouring at night for as long as decoction and milk last.9 The old tiffin rooms keep stricter hours: Brahmin's Coffee Bar has no tables, takes payment first and serves 06:00–12:00 and 15:00–19:00, closed on Sundays.10

Specialty cafés are a different matter if you bring a laptop. In March 2026 Conçu in Indiranagar said it does not allow long laptop sessions at weekends, and several Indiranagar cafés allow laptops on weekdays but restrict them at weekends and busy times.1112 Subko has no outright ban, but asks laptop users to move to its work zones when it fills up.13
