Jayanagar's foundation was laid in 1948, which makes it one of Bengaluru's first planned neighborhoods.1 It has ten blocks, numbered 1 to 9 plus a 4th T Block; the 3rd and 4th are mostly commercial, and the BDA Shopping Complex was added in 1976. South End Circle, where six roads meet, marks what was long the southern end of the city.1
The darshini started here. Cafe Darshini, opened in Jayanagar in 1983 by R. Prabhakar, is generally credited as the first of the city's pay-first, stand-up counters, though it has since closed.2 Today Jayanagar has more specialty roasters than any other part of Bengaluru, with Alchemy, Arabica Coffea, Tattva and Firefly.
Local tip: Namma Filter Coffee on 22nd Cross opens at 06:00 and serves until midnight, early and late enough to bracket a day of roaster cafés.
