Malleshwaram is named after the Kadu Malleshwara Temple, which dates to the 17th century; inscriptions from 1669 record Ekoji I granting it a village near the modern Indian Institute of Science.1 The neighborhood itself was laid out after plague reached Bangalore by train on 11 August 1898, as one of two model extensions with broad roads, drains and space for light and air.2 It covered 291 acres.2
