By one measure, Ubud has more vegan restaurants per person than almost anywhere. The Vegan World's 2023 ranking, which counts HappyCow restaurant listings against population, put Ubud second in the world with 30.7 vegan restaurants per 100,000 inhabitants, behind Phuket and ahead of Chiang Mai, and tied this to its role as a hub for tourists and digital nomads.1
Balinese cooking pulls the other way. As Hindus, most Balinese never or rarely eat beef, but pork is another matter: babi guling is Balinese-style roast pork.2 Ubud has the most cafés with vegetarian options, followed by Canggu, then Seminyak, Uluwatu and Sanur.
Local tip: At a warung, say tanpa terasi as well as tanpa daging: shrimp paste goes into sambal and into some vegetable dishes.
Where these cafés are: Ubud (12), Canggu (5), Uluwatu & the Bukit (3), Sanur (3), Seminyak & Kerobokan (3), Denpasar (1).

Meat-free dishes in Balinese and Indonesian food
Several Balinese dishes come in meat-free versions. Jukut urab is mixed vegetables tossed with grated coconut, lawar is sometimes made with no meat at all, and basa genep, the Balinese spice mix, is the base of many curry and vegetable dishes.2 Tempeh, soybeans bound into a cake by a Rhizopus mold, is native to Java, where it is a staple source of protein.3
The catch is shrimp paste. Terasi is a key ingredient in sambal terasi, the chili relish, and in other Indonesian dishes such as sayur asem, a tamarind vegetable soup.4 At a warung, ask for tanpa terasi (without shrimp paste) as well as tanpa daging (without meat).
Ubud's vegetarian cafés
Jalan Hanoman, one of the two long roads that run south from Jalan Raya Ubud, has Clear Café at No. 8, open 08:00–23:00, and Sawobali at No. 73.5 On Jalan Raya Ubud itself, ary's bookcafe puts organic and vegetarian food in its name. Muse Cafe & Art at 6 Jalan Sri Wedari runs 08:00–23:00, Old Friends Coffee at 5 Jalan Nyuh Bojog 09:00–18:00, and BunBaliCafe on Jalan Gautama Selatan 12:00–20:00.
A 2018 Intrepid Travel guide found that almost every restaurant in Ubud caters to vegans, and that yoga is the town's exercise of choice.6 The Ubud Food Festival takes place every April, when local restaurants run special menus over a few days.5
Canggu, Seminyak, the Bukit and Sanur
In Canggu, I Am Vegan Babe Cafe at 49 Jalan Tanah Barak opens 07:00–17:00 and Give Cafe at 85 Jalan Padang Linjong 07:00–21:00. Peloton at 46 Jalan Pantai Berawa serves until 22:00, and Word Bali Canggu Cafe at 45B Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong stays open until 23:00 on Fridays. Plant-based dishes fill many of the brunch menus in Canggu, as Harper's Bazaar Singapore pointed out in 2023.7
Seminyak's Earth Cafe & Market and EARTHXPRESS both run 07:00–23:00, and Umalas Breakfast Club in Kerobokan opens 07:00–15:00, Monday to Saturday. On the Bukit, Cacao Flow Freshtaurant is on Jalan Pantai Balangan and HE’ENALU cafe & resto on Jalan Raya Uluwatu. Sanur has KooD - Kolaborasi Untuk Desa at 2 Jalan Kutat Lestari and Jhoii Local Eats at 31 Jalan Danau Poso, and Denpasar has Marble Coffee on Jalan Bypass Gatot Subroto.
