Hatchōbori (八丁堀) is named for the outer moat on the east side of Hiroshima Castle, which ran about 8 chō, or 872 m.1 Its tram stop on Hiroden's main line is served by lines 1, 2, 6 and 9, and Nagarekawa (流川), just to the southeast, forms one walkable district with it.1
Nagarekawa takes its name from a stream that once ran north to south and served as a water supply in the early Edo period; it now flows almost entirely underground. The city describes it as the leading entertainment district of Chūgoku and Shikoku.2 The cafés sit mostly in the side streets around it: Horikawa-chō, Ebisu-chō, Kanayama-chō and Hashimoto-chō toward the Kyōbashi River.
Local tip: Get to Horikawa-chō before 11:30 for a morning set at Asahi Coffee Salon, which Bus Trip lists from 08:00 to 11:30.4

Morning sets on Horikawa-chō
Asahi Coffee Salon (朝日珈琲サロン) opened in 1950 and sits down a flight of stairs in the basement of the Ōuchi Building at Horikawa-chō 5-1, about five minutes on foot from the Hatchōbori tram stop. Its tables and chairs were made to order, every seat is non-smoking, and it takes PayPay. The house dish is an omelet curry, and the toasts come with cinnamon or sweet adzuki paste.3
Bus Trip's breakfast guide, updated in March 2026, lists Asahi's mōningu (モーニング, morning set) from 08:00 to 11:30; the healthy set, toast topped with nattō, costs ¥850.4 The same guide sends heartier eaters to Ginzan Base (銀山ベース) at Ginzan-chō 1-2, where a cutlet-sandwich set or a toast set costs ¥1,000 and the coffee is made in a French press.4
Siphons and small rooms in Kanayama-chō and Ebisu-chō
Kissabu W (喫茶部w), at Kanayama-chō 5-2, describes itself as a small kissaten serving siphon coffee, light meals on rice-flour bread and soft-serve ice cream.5 Morgan is at Kanayama-chō 8-4 and Relay Point 616 on a second floor at 5-10.
Kadomoto Coffee (カドモト珈琲店) is at Ebisu-chō 4-8, and Café Snooze (カフェ スヌーズ) is on the fifth floor at Ebisu-chō 3-24. Toward the river, Wakakusa Coffee (若草コーヒー店) is at Hashimoto-chō 4-5. Okuda Roast Cafe, a specialty roaster, is at Hatchōbori 12-21, and Café Mitaki (Caféみたき) opens daily 08:00–19:00.
Cafés on the Kyōbashi riverbank
Hiroshima's riverside open cafés began in October 2005, the first permanent shops run by private businesses on river land anywhere in Japan.6 Seven operate under the program as of July 2026, six of them along the Kyōbashi River.7
Two of them are in this area. Musimpanen (ムッシム・パネン), at Ginzan-chō 1-16, bakes cakes with ingredients from farms it contracts with, and Tea Garden Pul-Pul is a tea specialist on the riverbank at Hashimoto-chō 11.7 Musimpanen has air conditioning, step-free access and toilets, and takes cards. Cafe REGALO shares the Hashimoto-chō riverbank address.
Ebisu-kō in November
Every year from 18 to 20 November, Ebisu Shrine in Ebisu-chō holds its autumn festival, Ebisu-kō, spilling out along Chūō-dōri. Shoppers buy komazarae (こまざらえ), bamboo rakes hung with gold coins and treasure ships, for good business.8 Shops on the Ebisu-dōri shopping street hold sales during the festival.1
