Hiroshima Station's new building, minamoa, opened in March 2025. On 3 August 2025 Hiroden opened the Ekimae-Ōhashi line, about 1.1 km from the Hijiyama-chō crossing, and trams now run on an elevated track straight into the building's second floor; changing from the JR central gate takes about 70 seconds. The first tram on the new line left at 06:01.1

The new route cut about four minutes from tram trips between the station and Inari-machi, and Saruhashi-chō stop closed with it.2 The cafés lie on both sides of the tracks: Hikari-machi and Futaba-no-sato behind the north exit, Matsubara-chō, Kyōbashi-chō and Matoba-chō to the south.

Local tip: Visit Hikari-machi on a weekday: Matsu Coffee and Ajisai both close on Sundays and public holidays.34

Hikari-machi, behind the north exit

Matsu Coffee (松珈琲), at Hikari-machi 1-11-5, has roasted its own beans since it opened in 1975, adjusting each day's roast to the beans. A second-generation owner took over in 2022 and kept the house style. Besides the Matsu Blend there are hot sandwiches and spaghetti Napolitan, and beans to take away. Inside are wood panels, jazz and old coffee magazines; the shop has no parking of its own and points drivers to coin lots nearby. Its online shop ships beans anywhere in Japan.3

On the same block, Ajisai (紫陽花) at Hikari-machi 1-11-24 brews in a siphon and has been open for about 50 years. Bus Trip lists its morning sets from 07:30: an A set for ¥600, a B set for ¥700 and a zōsui (rice porridge) set for ¥900; it closes on Sundays and public holidays.4 Kissa en (喫茶en) is at 1-8-6, and Lotta and unRobi are in Hikari-machi 2-chōme.

Breakfast in Futaba-no-sato

Olifan (オリファン), at Futaba-no-sato 1-1-16, is a neighborhood kissaten where regulars read the newspaper. It serves one morning set, from 07:00 to 10:30, for ¥700: toast with jam, ham, scrambled egg, lettuce, fruit and coffee.4

Light roasts in Kyōbashi-chō

South of the tracks, Shimaji Coffee is in the Wada Daiichi Building at Kyōbashi-chō 8-11. Sprudge described it in 2024 as a quiet room for light-roast coffee, with floating benches and a La Marzocco Linea Classic. Every bag of beans comes with a card giving origin, region, variety, process and altitude, with brewing instructions on the back.5 The lab opened after the original Shimaji shop did well, and its counter pairs pour-overs with cakes, muffins, brownies and tarts.5

The riverside open cafés reach this side of the station too. The left-bank stretch of the Kyōbashi River in Kyōbashi-chō, between Kyōbashi Bridge and the east end of Inari Bridge, is one of the places where the city leases riverbank land to private cafés and restaurants.6

Anna Cafe is at Kyōbashi-chō 7-16. In Matsubara-chō, WABI is at 10-15 and Minori Cafe (みのりカフェ) is on the second floor of ekie, the station's shopping complex; Le Garage is on the ground floor of the Edion Tsutaya Kaden store at Matsubara-chō 3-1-1. Matoba-chō has Matsunaga-ya (まつなが屋) and Aoi Tori (青い鳥).
