Carabanchel is Madrid's most populous district, formed when the towns of Carabanchel Alto and Carabanchel Bajo were annexed in 1948; the name first appears in writing in 1181.1 Its seven barrios lie between the M-30, the M-40 and the A-42, crossed by metro lines 5, 6 and 11, and the old Carabanchel prison was pulled down in 2008.1

This is an everyday coffee district, with most of its cafeterías on Calle del General Ricardos, Vía Carpetana and Paseo de Extremadura on the Puerta del Ángel side. Specialty counters are few and far apart, so pick one before you cross the river.

Local tip: Check ORA contemporary's site for its current exhibition and book a visit before crossing town.2

Coffee chains in Carabanchel & Puerta del Ángel

Art and espresso on Teniente Ochoa Olalla

ORA contemporary, at Calle de Teniente Ochoa Olalla 13, is an art gallery with a specialty coffee corner, directed by Ana Barrenechea, that aims to make contemporary art more accessible.2 The name comes from the Latin for "now".2 The gallery itself calls Carabanchel one of the liveliest centers of Madrid's contemporary art scene.2

As of November 2026, the show is "Calle de nadie" by Julia Juaniz, an award-winning filmmaker who works directly on found film strips, frame by frame.2 The site invites you to book your visit, and the gallery also runs a cultural program and screenings.2

Bread and specialty coffee on Calle de Juan Duque

Rosipan, at Calle de Juan Duque 14, on the Puerta del Ángel side, is a bakery café with its own workshop. Bread and pastry are made there every morning and served with specialty coffee, and a separate bar section handles breakfast, brunch and merienda (late-afternoon snack).3 Cafetería Juan Duque, a few doors along at number 20, is the plain neighborhood counterpart.

Bar Albor Cafe, at Paseo de Extremadura 37, is the nearest alternative if you are walking up from the river, and El Gato Negro, on the same avenue, has outdoor seats.

A house roast on Avenida de Oporto and newer arrivals

Astral Cafetería has been in Carabanchel since 1989.4 It sells its own 100% arabica blend, described as sweet and aromatic with notes of cocoa, by the bag and by subscription, along with a portable coffee maker, and also runs a full restaurant at Avenida de Oporto 53.4

Older places are being renewed around it. La Capa, a cafeteria from the 1960s on Calle Condes de Barcelona, reopened in October 2024 under three friends who kept its green tiles, marble tables and mirrors, although it now works more as a restaurant.5 Then, in December 2025, Hola Coffee, founded in 2016 by Pablo Caballero and Nolo Botana, opened its third Madrid site on Avenida de Pedro Díez, with a roastery and academy you can watch at work.6

Elsewhere, Calle del General Ricardos remains the district's working spine, where Cafetería Clarisas has outdoor seats and vegan options and Café de Oporto has indoor seats and vegan options. Churrería Quinta Generación, along Calle de Antonio Leyva, sets out tables outdoors.
